Sun Road plows at Big Bend
The Daily Inter Lake | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 13 years, 7 months AGO
Glacier National Park snow plows have advanced to the Big Bend area on Going-to-the-Sun Road, about 2.5 miles west of Logan Pass, while an east-side plowing crew is working in the Siyeh Bend area.
The west side crew has been cutting through snow depths of 8 to 17 feet.
Hikers and bikers can travel from the vehicle gate at Avalanche Creek as far as Bird Woman Falls Overlook Fridays through Sundays. In general Monday through Thursday, there is limited or no hiker/biker access beyond Avalanche, depending on where road reconstruction is under way.
On the east side, hikers and bikers can travel about nine miles beyond the vehicle gate while construction is under way on weekdays. There are no restrictions on weekends.
The earliest Sun Road can road can open over Logan Pass is June 15, because of contractual terms that allow construction activity on both lanes until that date.
All other main roads with the exception of the Cut Bank Road are now open.
