COEUR d'ALENE - Coeur d'Alene High sophomore Sydni Parker only had one official at-bat, a flyout in the fifth inning, in four trips to the plate in Thursday's 5A Region 1 softball tournament second-place game at Larry Schwenke Field.

But it was her final plate appearance that helped extend the season.

Parker hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score pinch-runner Jadyn Behm with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Vikings defeated the Lewiston Bengals 5-4 to advance to the state 5A tournament at Capell Park in Chubbuck next weekend.

"That was so huge," Parker said. "I knew I had to put the ball in play. It's pretty exciting to get back to the state tournament."

With one out, Coeur d'Alene received singles by Chelsey Rasmussen, Nikki Ragsdale and Lindsie Scholwinski to load the bases for Parker.

"It really showed a lot of character to get that run across," Coeur d'Alene coach Larry Bieber said. "Rasmussen comes up and crushes the ball and a freshman scores the winning run. Sydni really helped us with a couple backhands in the field - she was definitely our player of the game."

Coeur d’Alene (19-5) opens the tournament next Friday at 9 a.m. PDT against Capital (11-14) of Boise, the runner-up from the District 3 tournament.

Lake City (21-1), which won the Region 1 title on Tuesday, opens vs. Timberline (15-10) of Boise next Friday at 11 a.m.

Parker also drove in the first run of the game on a fielder’s choice in the second inning for Coeur d’Alene, which extended its lead to 2-0 on an RBI single by Randi Spencer in the fourth inning.

In the fifth, Rasmussen singled in Elli Tindall, and Brooke Albertson scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.

Lewiston battled back with a four-run sixth inning, tying the game at 4 on a sacrifice fly by Kellsi Parson as Spencer made a diving catch along the left field foul line.

“That’s how it’s been against Lewiston this year,” Bieber said. “Every game against them this year they’ve scored in the sixth inning and tied it up. The only difference from Tuesday was we had an answer today.”

Scholwinski struck out seven before being replaced by Ragsdale with nobody out in the seventh.

“I just came out here dedicated to getting back to state and ready to play,” Scholwinski said. “Both teams played great. I’m just proud of our team for sticking it out.”

Paige Wells doubled with one out in the seventh for Lewiston, but was unable to score as Ragsdale struck out Chelsey Thomason and Emily Moscrip to end the inning.

“It was a good, hard fought game,” said Lewiston coach Dave Garrett, whose Bengals beat Coeur d’Alene 3-1 in the first round on Tuesday. “It just took us too long to get going today. We played hard and battled back, but just didn’t get it done.”

Lewiston finishes 15-10.
