Elizabeth Brookmiller Shadwick, 91
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 12 years, 9 months AGO
Elizabeth, born May 2, 1920, in Ashland, Ore., quietly passed away on Dec. 1, 2011, in Post Falls.
Elizabeth had a deep love for her family and friends as well as a desire to help anyone in need. She was always involved in many projects to assist children and youth in their Christian growth. She served as a counselor at many summer camps and retreats. In the 1950s, she and her husband, Gilbert, were involved in Christian Education work on the Navajo reservation in Chinle, Ariz.
Elizabeth had extraordinary skills in administration. When the Shadwicks moved from La Habra to San Clemente, Calif., in the early 1960s, they worked with churches and the community leaders to establish a much needed Servicemen’s Center. While she and her husband were operating this center, she arranged for more than 1,000 Marines to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner with local families.
Elizabeth and Gilbert moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1972. There they bought a beautiful old mansion and turned it into a Bed and Breakfast, which they operated for many years. In Coeur d’Alene, another project was awaiting her creative and organizational talents. Camp Lutherhaven needed help with their funding so Elizabeth helped create Castaway Fair. It became an extremely successful event held annually at Camp Lutherhaven.
The Shadwicks retired from the Bed and Breakfast and moved to Hayden in 1992. There Elizabeth founded the International Bed and Breakfast Exchange publishing an annual listing of Bed and Breakfasts located all over the USA, Canada and Europe. Her final project was starting the Junior Volunteer Project at Life Care in Coeur d’Alene. It continues to this day.
Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Linna Fauntelle (Shadwick) Lawrence; grandchildren Randall Lawrence, Patrick Connors, Kalleen Howard Sorenson and Kevin Howard; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert; and her daughter, Connie Howard.
A public memorial service for Elizabeth will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 19, 2012, at Camp Lutherhaven, 3258 West Lutherhaven Road, 6.5 miles south of Coeur d’Alene off U.S. 95 onto Kidd Island Bay Road. Follow the signs to Camp Lutherhaven.
