Viking boys second after first day
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 12 years, 8 months AGO
Their coach described their round as "average", but the Coeur d'Alene Viking boys are just two strokes behind the leader after Monday's first day of the state 5A golf tournament at Pinecrest Golf Course in Idaho Falls.
Coeur d'Alene shot an 11-over 291, good for second place behind two-time defending champion Eagle, and three shots ahead of third-place Boise heading into today's final 18 holes of play.
"The boys shot average - not great, but they didn't shoot bad," Coeur d'Alene coach Bryan Duncan said. "We didn't shoot ourselves out of it, I'll put it that way."
Hunter Kraft shot a 1-over 71 to lead the Vikings, and is in fourth place in the medalist hunt. Michael Porter is tied for fifth after a 72, and Stephen Roller is tied for ninth after a 73. John Duffin and Kyle Kaufman each shot 75. Kaufman won a playoff last week for the Vikings' No. 5 spot; his name was erroneously left out of Monday's story.
"The scores were a little higher than I thought," said Duncan, whose team shot practice rounds of 281 and 287 on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. "This course is deceptively difficult. It has small greens, so it's a real shooter's course. It's tree-lined, kind of like Coeur d'Alene Public, but there are some longer par-4s and par-3s."
Tye Smith shot 77 for Lake City.
Post Falls shot 321 and is in eighth place out of eight teams after the first day.
"We had a rough day today," Post Falls coach Matt Barkley said.
Kenny Dodge led the Trojans with a 78. Trevor Fedele, who was medalist at last week's Region 1 tournament at Prairie Falls with a 63, shot 83 on Monday.
Coeur d'Alene's girls shot a 402, and are in seventh place out of eight teams. Jordan Hintz led the Vikings with an 87. Lewiston shot a 324 and leads by seven strokes.
Maddie Dodge of Post Falls shot a 78 and is in sixth place in the medalist hunt.
"She had a pretty good round today," Barkley said. "She had a few rough spots, but got it together on the back nine, and made some putts."
Lakeland's Derek Bayley shot a 4-under 68 to take a one-shot lead at the state 4A tournament at Blackfoot Golf Course.
Bayley birdied 4 of the last 5 holes to take the lead in the two-day event.
"Derek had opportunities early, but had a few 3-putts," Lakeland coach Mario Maddy said.
Bayley's sister Chelsea carded an 84 in the girls tournament, and is tied for sixth.
"She struggled a bit but it was a pretty solid round," Maddy said. "I'm looking forward to see her shoot a good round tomorrow."
Twin Falls' boys and Bishop Kelly's girls lead after the first day.
At the Preston Golf and Country Club, Kellogg's boys shot a 313 and lead by five shots over Marsh Valley.
Dain Harden of Kellogg shot a 75 and is tied for fifth place, and teammate Jesse Lambert shot 77 and is tied for eighth.
In the girls tourney, two-time defending champion Kaceelyn Pouttu of Kellogg shot a 72 and leads by nine strokes. Kellogg is in second place, seven strokes behind Weiser.
Madi Hauck of Timberlake is in third place after shooting 85.
Lakeside's boys are in eighth place out of nine teams in the 2A tourney at Highland Golf Course in Pocatello.
Wallace's girls are in third place out of five teams. Kenzie Dire of Wallace shot 94 and is tied for second.
