COEUR d'ALENE - Kootenai County Prosecuting Attorney Barry McHugh will serve a second term, voters decided in Tuesday's Republican primary.

McHugh swept with 7,591 votes, or 62.6 percent of the votes, ahead of opponent attorney Donald Gary.

Gary earned 4,517 votes, or 37 percent of the votes.

McHugh has lauded the effective prosecution of cases under his watch, like the Tankovich hate crime case and the Jonathan Ellington re-trial.

He said improved management of the Prosecutor's Office under his direction likely put him on top, he said.

"The efficient operation of the office from a fiscal basis has been important, as well as just reestablishing the reputation of the office," McHugh said.

There are no Democrats running for the prosecuting attorney position, so McHugh will run unopposed in the general election.
