EPHRATA - Ephrata boys tennis thrilled the home crowd at the CWAC 2A District Tournament as the team captured top honors and bragging right among their competitors.
The three day event took place in Selah May 10, then finished up in Ephrata May 12 and 14. The Tigers finished with 25 points, Ellensburg was second with 22, Othello placed fifth with 13, and Quincy placed last out of the 10 teams with four points. No doubles team will advance to the regional tournament at the Yakima Tennis Club Saturday, but Ephrata will send two singles players to the event.
"On Thursday, our second and third doubles were eliminated," coach Missy Beierman said. "Both teams had tough draws in the tournament, but I thought they played pretty well against tough competition. On Saturday, our first double Calvin and Mauricio were able to pull out a three setter against the No. 1 doubles team from Quincy. It was good to see them get a few more points for our boys team."
But the two then matched up with the No. 1 seeded group from Toppenish and were eliminated in two sets 6-1, 6-1.
"That score really doesn't tell just how well they played them," Beierman said. "Many games went to deuce, so I was happy to see our boys compete at a high level."
Making the trip to Spokane are Hunter Sears who defeated Jordan Shafer from Selah 6-0, 6-0 to claim the No. 1 seed, and Michael Bosner, who turned back East Valley's Cameron Snyder 6-4, 6-0 and is the No. 3 seed at the tournament.
"Hunter rolled to the semifinals with his two wins. His overall consistency has really paid off," Beierman said. "Michael struggled a bit in his quarterfinals match against Amrit Khinda. He lost confidence in his strokes, but was able to find a way to win."
Girls
The Lady Tigers didn't fair as well as the boys as the team finished fifth out of 10 schools that took part in the tournament.
Selah took first with 22 points, Othello (15) tied for fourth with Prosser, and Quincy (11) placed sixth.
The only girl to advance to the regional tournament was the Tigers No. 1 singles Bianca Schley
"Bianca had a first round bye, but played very well in her next four matches, "Beierman said. "She showed great patience with some long rallies."
Schley beat Mary Kelleher from Eburg in two sets 6-3, 6-0, turned back Othello's Amelia Roylance 6-3, 6-3, shutout Ashley Bond from Selah in the semifinal round 6-0, 6-0, and defeated Nathalie Gruber from Ellensburg in the final round 6-1, 6-1 to take the No. 1 seed.
