PLUMMER — The FBI spent Friday investigating the death of a 39-year-old man in a run-down trailer home across the street from the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Headquarters.
Benewah County Coroner Ronald Hodge confirmed the man’s name as Thomas Richard Schoolcraft. Hodge said an autopsy was performed Friday in Spokane.
Schoolcraft’s driver’s license said he’s a Spokane Valley resident.
Joseph L. James, 28, of Plummer, was being held Friday in Kootenai County jail on charges of homicide, burglary and aggravated battery. The charges were filed under Tribal code.
Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Stuart Miller said James has seven previous arrests in Kootenai County.
Miller said James was arrested Friday and no bond had been set on the homicide charge. A $5,000 bond was set for each of the lesser charges.
The white trailer home where FBI agents and police conducted their investigation is on the southeast corner of the intersection of A and Eighth streets in Plummer. Yellow police tape surrounded the home throughout the morning.
Todd Palmer, a spokesman for the FBI, said the agency for now is calling it a “suspicious death.”
He said their investigation is ongoing.
Neighbor Sonny Falcon said about a half-dozen people appear to have been living in the trailer.
“There was always lots of drinking down there all the time,” Falcon said.
Heather Keen, a spokeswoman for the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, said in an email Friday, “A tribal member died last night under suspicious circumstances and the FBI is investigating.”
She declined to provide further details.
It couldn’t be confirmed with authorities, but Falcon said Schoolcraft got into a fight with his cousin, James, during the night or early morning.
Someone in the home later found Schoolcraft unconscious and called for help. It was unclear if the alleged scuffle with James had any connection to Schoolcraft’s death.
Falcon said he knew Schoolcraft and James from working at the casino in Worley.
“They grew up around here,” Falcon said.
