A nearly $100,000 renovation has the spotlight shining on The Lake City Playhouse.
The project has included interior work - paint, carpet, furniture, lighting fixtures, video monitors, concessions, plumbing and electrical repairs.
Outside, plumbing repairs, landscaping, steeple fountain, foundation repairs, new roof, electrical repairs, new insulation, new siding and a fire suppression system have been installed.
Production improvements include lighting upgrades and sound equipment. All told, it adds up to a beautiful community theater at 1323 Garden Ave.
"We just wanted to have a fun way to show the public that we are keeping our promise," said Playhouse artistic director George Green. "We are making huge strides with your theater."
The new materials are low maintenance and energy efficient.
"A good looking building should benefit ticket sales," Green added.
The work was necessary because the Playhouse is nearly 70 years old. The project thus far has exceeded $90,000 in renovation.
It was funded mostly due to the generosity of the involved contractors. Some capital funds, $16,000, were raised for the current siding project.
While happy with the progress, there are improvements still to be made. Most pressing is an upgrade to the lighting/dimming system projected to cost about $6,000. This phase will get the lighting system up to date.
Bathrooms and the concrete entryway to the theater are also targeted for work.
"We are hopeful that we can have a new covered event patio built on the east side of the building this summer - many companies and other nonprofits are seeing the benefit of partnering with us and holding events for various productions," Green said.
Finally, new seating will be the goal for 2014.
Overall, the project will give patrons a comfortable, safe feeling, while the Playhouse should see a drop in utility bills.
The public can still help.
Green shared a recent incident to highlight the Playhouse's impact on the community.
"Theater will entertain you while benefiting many other citizens that grace the stage," he wrote. "Just the other day, a young lady walked up and introduced herself. She was just visiting home briefly before leaving to study abroad - completely funded via scholarships. She then told me she earned her way by learning how to better communicate - a trait she never thought possible until she became involved with Lake City Playhouse."
He said residents can help by purchasing season tickets or individual show tickets.
"It is extremely affordable and well worth every cent," he wrote.
The proof, he said, is on stage, and he encourages folks to see the special showing of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Even Trying" on May 24 and judge for themselves.

A special "Renovation Celebration Show" at the Playhouse is set for May 24.
"Join us for a special celebration and viewing of the current renovation progress," says a press release.
The evening will conclude with a performance of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying!"
Appetizers and beverages are included in the discounted ticket price, $15.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the show at 7:30.
