Coeur d'Alene girls second, Lake City third

MERIDIAN - When Morgan Struble set the state record in the girls 300-meter hurdles last season, it took three months for the accomplishment to sink in.
"I just thought, 'Oh, I have the state record,'" Struble recalled. "It was weird to say."
The Coeur d'Alene High senior is a record holder once again after setting another state mark in her signature event during the second and final day of the 5A track and field championships at Rocky Mountain High.
Struble blistered the 300 hurdles course in 42.84 seconds, bettering last year's winning time of 43.40 in a dominating performance.
"That was huge," Coeur d'Alene coach Linda Lanker said. "It was our goal all year for her to break 43 seconds."
Struble wasn't the only local state champion during Saturday's festivities. Coeur d'Alene senior Madison Seaman won the shot put title to go with Friday's title in the discus and Lake City junior Leanne Asper had a superb day - winning the 800 title and running the final leg of the school's winning entry in the 4x200 relay.
Mountain View easily won the girls team title with 106 points, but Coeur d'Alene (71) finished second and Lake City (70.5) was third in a strong showing by the two North Idaho schools.
“People down (in the Boise area) don’t understand maybe the weather difficulties we consistently have in the north, so for two teams to come down and perform this well is really nice to see,” Lake City coach Kelly Reed said. “We’re in snow until the end of March a lot of times. We had three or four meets canceled this year due to weather, so for them to perform like this shows the level of talent that a lot of the kids in the north have.”
Said Lanker: “To have a second and third against all these Boise schools that get to train outside every day, that’s a huge showing for our part of the state.”
Struble, who has signed with Hawaii, was geared up to again be the best in the state of Idaho in the 300 hurdles but was unaware she had surpassed her own record until a few minutes after the race.
“I had no idea that it was that fast, especially when they were announcing the other girls’ times,” Struble said. “I was surprised.”
Struble also surpassed the previous record in the 100 hurdles, but her time of 14.40 seconds was only second best as Capital High’s Jade Childs won with a state record time of 14.37 seconds. The previous record was 14.45 by Skyline’s Tia Lumpkin in 2006.
Asper won the 800 in 2 minutes, 17.16 seconds after being boxed in early in the race. During the final lap, she kicked her legs into a higher gear and won by nearly a full second over Rocky Mountain’s Dana Snell.
“During the last 100 (meters) I thought to myself, ‘How bad do I really want this?’” Asper said. “So I went wide and gave it everything I had.
“It’s like a dream come true. Everything I’ve been working hard for and all the workouts I’ve been doing pushing myself, this is just amazing.”
Asper, who finished third in the 200 in 25.36 seconds, also excelled on the final leg of the winning relay team that was clocked in 1 minute, 42.71 seconds, just off the state 4x200 record set by Twin Falls (1:42.61) in 2005.
Senior Carly Garcia ran the first 200 meters and was followed by freshman Maddison Ward. Lake City moved into the lead on a stellar third leg by freshman Alissa Jolliff.
“I saw we were not going as fast as we usually could and that I just needed to give my best and get around the corner as fast as I could,” Jolliff said. “Since it is my last track meet (of the season), I might as well give it my all.”
Seaman capped her Coeur d’Alene career by following up a winning effort in the discus — she tied the state record in that event on Friday — with a strong performance while winning the shot put in 40-10 1/4.
“It’s like a weight lifted,” Seaman said. “People expected this from me and I kind of fulfilled my duties for my school.”
Seaman had a toss of 40-6 early in the competition and made her final high school throw a memorable one with the shot sailing more than four inches farther.
The throw was a personal best, just like her winning discus throw on Friday.
“To go out with two PRs in two days is a pretty decent time,” Seaman said.
Lake City junior Brittany Pope finished second in the high jump at 5-2. Coeur d’Alene senior Michelle Flannery finished fifth, also with a 5-2 that represents a personal best.
Coeur d’Alene’s 4x400 relay team of freshman Victoria Goetz, sophomore Brittany Tackett, freshman Kaitlyn Gunnerson and Struble finished second in 3:57.67. Lake City’s quartet of Ward, Jolliff, freshman Meaghan Bare and Asper were third in 3:58.59.
In the girls 4x100 relay, Lake City’s group of Garcia, Ward, sophomore Jayden Hall and Jolliff finished fourth in 49.19 seconds. Coeur d’Alene was fifth in 49.23, with a foursome of Tackett, Goetz, Gunnerson and Struble.
Among boys, Lake City senior Nick Gosselin was third in the 400 in 49.98 seconds and the school’s 4x200 relay team of senior Kaleb Mitchell, sophomore Rikki McCaw, junior Zach Ross and Gosselin finished third in 1:29.82.
Other medalists include Coeur d’Alene junior Mike Dunton (fourth, 800, 1:56.69), Post Falls senior Sam Wardell (sixth, discus, 154-7), Coeur d’Alene senior Carlos Martinez (sixth, 100, 11.02 seconds) and Coeur d’Alene senior Cody Curtis (sixth, 1,600, 4:26.04).
Post Falls junior Wednesday Walton finished fourth in the 300 hurdles (46.14) and sixth in the 100 hurdles (15.40).
Rocky Mountain won the boys title with 133.5 points. Lake City (34) was seventh, Coeur d’Alene (29.5) was eighth and Post Falls (19.5) was 13th.
Post Falls finished 16th in the girls competition with 13 points.
4A: Sandpoint sophomore distance ace Sam Levora ran a 4:31 to place third in the 1,600, just one second off assistant track coach Matt Brass’ school record, set in 1994.
On Friday, Levora broke Brian Griffin’s 1988 school record in the 3,200 with a 9:39, also finishing third overall.
Todd Pays was eighth in the discus, the only other Bulldog boy to score points on Saturday at Middleton High.
Jordan Ward won the high jump for Lakeland, which finished 18th. Kaitlyn Whitesitt was eighth in the pole vault for Lakeland.
Junior Maddie Suppiger led the Bulldog girls team with a sixth in the 100 hurdles and seventh in the high jump, Lily DeAragon was seventh in the 400 and the 4x100 relay team of Mary Aylward, Emma Weme, Kennedy Kindred and DeAragon finished sixth, while the 4x200 and 4x400 teams both finished 7th.
3A: Championships by Chris Spiers (100) and Garret Wendt (high jump) helped the Kellogg boys finish seventh at Eagle High.
Bonners Ferry’s Jacob Callister won the 800 and ran a leg on the school’s winning sprint medley relay team and Micah Krmpotich finished seventh in the 1,600 for the Badgers, who finished ninth.
Timberlake’s boys finished 12th.
Rachel Ward won the 300 hurdles for the Timberlake girls in 46.12 seconds and ran on the school’s winning relay team in the 4x200 as the Tigers finished third. Two-time defending champion Sam Simmons was second in the pole vault, Brooke Nowlan sixth in the 1,600 and seventh in the 3,200 and Natalie Herring eighth in the 800 for Timberlake.
Lauren Cooper won the shot put and was third in the discus, Taylor Sheppard was second in the high jump and third in the 100 hurdles for Kellogg, which finished fourth.
Steffie Pavey was fifth in the 800 for Priest River, which finished 12th.
2A: Asia Bloodgood finished eighth in the 300 hurdles for Coeur d’Alene Charter at Centennial High in Boise.
1A: Brandon Carman repeated as champion in the 300 hurdles and was sixth in the 110 hurdles for Kootenai, which finished 10th at Mountain View High in Meridian. Graydon Myhre won the pole vault with a leap of 14 feet, 7 inches for Kootenai, beating his closest competitor by nearly two feet. Carter Napierala finished tied for third in the pole vault.
Brandon Smith was fifth in the 110 hurdles for Lakeside.
Wampus Cat freshman Megan Frazier clocked a 13:32 to finish eighth in the 3,200 in her first trip to state as the lone representative from Clark Fork.
