RECALL: Beware those behind it

Last Monday I spent a couple hours at our new beautiful library. Tuesday I took an early morning walk with my dog in the scenic grounds of the Educational Corridor and later swam at the Kroc Center. What beautiful additions these things have been to Coeur d’Alene. The mayor and City Council have been instrumental in implementing all of these additions and more.

I have lived, worked and raised my children in Coeur d’Alene since 1970 and have seen it go through many changes. I want to see those good changes keep happening. I want my grandson to love coming to visit my town. I believe the mayor and City Council members have worked hard for the good of Coeur d’Alene. I think they have offered many opportunities for citizen input to planning; they have made modifications and adjustments because of this input; and then have made the decisions they feel will best continue to improve Coeur d’Alene. This is what we elected them to do. It has not been easy.

I love the small town feeling of Coeur d’Alene as much as anybody. The question is what will it take for Coeur d’Alene to thrive in the future? We know it will not be jobs from the timber or mining industries. We know it will probably not be a nice hometown ball park or a public boat launch in the center of town. We definitely know it will not be acres of asphalt next to the lake.

When I see shiny new cars with dealer plates sitting in neighborhoods with signs promoting the recall petition, I wonder: Is it the mayor and three City Council members who are trying to take over our town or is it someone else? The organization that is so diligently working to recall our elected leaders may not even be our neighbors.
