PABLO — For 10 years, Two Eagle River students have been stepping up and slamming down at the school’s annual art slam.

Poetry, prose, traditional and cultural art and photography were just a few of the categories for which Two Eagle students produced work to showcase to their peers. A new addition to this year’s show, the drama class featured a lineup of short films, which went off to streams of laughter and wild applause.

“It has changed and evolved, but it has definitely become one of the Two Eagle traditions that our students look forward to,” said Rebekah Knudsen-Dalbey, Two Eagle English teacher and one of the event’s organizers. “We had more entries in the music category this year, which was so great to see. The singing, dancing, and playing really enliven the event.”

The art slam is open to all grades (7-12), and about half of the school’s student body of around 100 students participate in some way.

“Some students pull out writing or projects that they have completed independently, but many of them work on projects and written work within their classes,” Knudsen-Dalbey said.

Perhaps the greatest thing the art slam puts on display is both the diversity and unity of Two Eagle’s students. While some performers bring comedy to the stage, still more share deep, meaningful emotions and raw feelings that cover many universal, but also some incredibly personal experiences.

“Our students often say that Two Eagle is like a family, so they are willing to share personal writing and artwork without fear of being ridiculed,” Knudsen-Dalbey said. “We work so closely with our students that we aren’t surprised by their talent, but we are always impressed with their bravery, resilience and support of one another.”
