Lake City HS wins $10,000 youth safety award

COEUR d'ALENE – May is National Youth Traffic Safety Month and students at Lake City High School will receive national attention Thursday for their work in promoting safe teen driving.

Death by car crash is the number one cause of death for teens in the United States and for several months students have been coordinating safe driving activities at school around the national Act Out Loud contest, sponsored by the Allstate Foundation and the National Organizations for Youth Safety. Students at Lake City High School received the top honor for their Safe-Tee shirt design, a creative community billboard sign and a Facebook yearbook application, expressing teen support for tougher teen driving laws.

“It was a united school effort and our students made this happen," said Dan Armstrong, adviser for the Business Professionals of America chapter at Lake City. "Our teens and everyone at our school will be safer, better drivers because of the Act Out Loud program and the awareness it has brought to our students."

The Lake City High School BPA chapter led in each phase of the overall contest including T-shirt designs, billboard sign design and an online platform campaign to pledge to be safe drivers this summer.

On Thursday, LCHS will be awarded $10,000 at an all-school assembly from 8:55 a.m. to 10:10 a.m. Musical artist Skyler will perform for the students and a broadcast will air on Channel One news which will be seen by nearly six million teens in high schools across the country.
