Marlins still sizzling in May

* NATIONAL LEAGUE

Mark Buehrle pitched effectively into the eighth inning and the Miami Marlins moved within a victory of tying the team record for the most in a month with a 5-3 win over the visiting San Francisco Giants on Saturday.

Giancarlo Stanton hit two doubles and scored twice while Logan Morrison drove in two runs for the Marlins. Miami is a major league best 18-7 in May. The Marlins went 19-10 in August 1997.

Nationals 8, Braves 4: Bryce Harper homered and Danny Espinosa added a three-run shot to help Washington win at Atlanta.

Mets 9, Padres 0: Johan Santana pitched a four-hitter for his first shutout since 2010 and New York routed visiting San Diego.

Phillies 4, Cardinals 0: Kyle Kendrick threw a seven-hitter for his first career shutout, winning his first game of the season and putting Philadelphia on the verge of its first four-game sweep in St. Louis in 26 years.

Pirates 3, Cubs 2: Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, and Pittsburgh sent visiting Chicago to its 11th straight loss.

Hague took a 96 mph fastball from Dolis in the back near the shoulder blade, scoring Jose Tabata and eliciting an incredulous look to the sky by the Cubs reliever.

Reds 10, Rockies 3: Chris Heisey gave Cincinnati the lead with his first home run of the season, and four relievers made it stand up as the Reds overcame a poor start by Mike Leake for a win over visiting Colorado.

Diamondbacks 8, Brewers 5: At Phoenix, John McDonald hit a three-homer and Arizona beat Milwaukee.

Dodgers 6, Astros 3: A.J. Ellis hit a three-run homer in the ninth to lift host Los Angeles past Houston.

* AMERICAN LEAGUE

Tigers 6, Twins 3: At Minneapolis, Max Scherzer struck out nine in a rain-shortened outing and Prince Fielder had his first four-hit game with the Tigers, leading Detroit to a a victory over Minnesota.

Scherzer gave up three runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings before leaving due to a rain delay.

Royals 4, Orioles 3: Eric Hosmer singled in the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning, Billy Butler homered and Kansas City rallied at Baltimore.

Rangers 8, Blue Jays 7, 13 inn.: At Arlington, Texas, Josh Hamilton hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 13th to lift Texas past Toronto.

Yankees 9, Athletics 2: Mark Teixeira hit a two-run homer and a solo shot among his career high-tying four hits to back CC Sabathia's sixth win of the year, and visiting New York routed Oakland for its fourth straight win.

White Sox 14, Indians 7: Dayan Viciedo homered in his third straight game, Paul Konerko had four hits, and host Chicago pounded Cleveland for its eighth win in nine games.

Red Sox 3, Rays 2: Jarrod Saltalamacchia had a pinch-hit, two-run homer off Fernando Rodney with one out in the ninth to rally Boston past visiting Tampa Bay.
