MISSOULA - Chad Nyquist and Nick Nyquist each had three RBIs as the Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen kicked off Monday's play with a 8-7 win over the Helena Senators at the Dale Dahlgren Memorial Day American League baseball tournament.

With the win, the Lums advanced to the title game against the Missoula Mavericks, which Coeur d'Alene lost on an error in the bottom of the seventh, 5-4.

Pete Hoffman struck out five in the title game.

"Pete was in command through the fifth inning," Lums coach Lloyd Duman said.

Hoffman hit three Missoula batters in a row in the sixth, and an ensuing error handed the Mavericks a 4-run inning.

Tied at 4-4, the Lums loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but a groundout and a double play kept the score knotted.

In the bottom of the inning, the Mavericks managed a base hit with two outs. A fielder's choice moved the runner to second before the game ended on an error by the Lums.

Against Helena, Braeden Jacobson's RBI single in the seventh propelled the Lums into the title game.

"It was a really positive week," Duman said. "It's a good foundation to build from, with two close games today. We see what we need to work on."

Coeur d'Alene (2-1) has Border Wars games in Spokane on Friday, Saturday and Sunday before starting its league schedule on Monday, hosting Prairie.
