Assistance for your pet

It's not a myth, people with pets live longer and are healthier than those who don't have one. Studies have shown that petting your cat or dog can release the hormone endorphins throughout your body. This helps you to feel calm and relaxed. Pets are also very accepting. They have an unconditional love that is great for a person's self-esteem and they give you a reason to take care of yourself. When that pet falls ill, it can be very traumatic for not only the pet but also for its owner. If the owner is on a fixed income, it becomes a crisis. The fear of losing their companion can start a series of health issues in the owner as well.

Locally, there is a nonprofit organization that helps owners in those situations. AJ's Tails & Trails was created to help those persons 55 and older who have a pet in need of veterinary assistance but cannot afford to get them the care they need. In order to qualify for this service, the owner must be on a low fixed income or be disabled.

When AJ's is contacted by someone in this situation, the founder, Sydne Watson, will contact the veterinarian to confirm the situation. If the owner doesn't have a vet, she will put them in touch with one. She will also confirm that the owner qualifies for the assistance. She will then arrange with the veterinarian for the care of the pet and arrange payment of the services directly to the veterinarian.

I myself have three four-legged children, also known as dogs. I would be devastated if something happened to one of them and was unable to get them the help they needed. I applaud Sydne in her effort to help the community in this effort. I have seen firsthand the benefits of a senior having a pet. My mother had a bird that she loved dearly and was always on her shoulder snuggling her neck.

Anyone wishing for more information concerning AJ's services can email Sydne at AJsTailsAndTrails@gmail.com or their website www.AJsTailsAndTrails.org.

Live a life worth following

A wise gentleman I knew once said that, "We should live a life worth following." When I heard this profound statement, I stopped to ponder the depth of its meaning. Do we all live a life worth following? How does that relate to the way we live and work in our daily lives? Would our children and grandchildren want to follow in our footsteps? Would we want them to?
