The Spokane Valley woman who left her two children by Interstate 90 on Tuesday said she doesn't remember anything from that day, said a Kootenai County Sheriff's Department official on Wednesday.

Shannon Germanton, also known as Shannon Duval, 27, was still being held at the Spokane County jail on Wednesday after being arrested on Tuesday night in Spokane Valley, over an outstanding Washington traffic warrant.

When Kootenai County deputies visited the Spokane jail to interview Germanton about Tuesday's events, she didn't remember leaving her children early that morning or what happened the rest of the day.

"She has no recollection," said Lt. Stu Miller. "The last time she remembers is the night before the children were found."

The Kootenai County Sheriff's Department and Post Falls Police had searched throughout the day and evening on Tuesday for Germanton, after her 3 and 6 year old boys were found sitting alone by I-90 near Post Falls on Tuesday morning.

Thanks to an anonymous tip, Spokane sheriff's deputies arrested Germanton at a Spokane Valley residence around 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening for a negligent driving warrant.

Kootenai County deputies also obtained a warrant for Germanton's arrest on Wednesday, charging her with two counts of felony injury to a child. Her bond on the warrant is $50,000.

Germanton will be held by Spokane County until her charges there are dealt with. She will then face extradition back to Idaho to face the injury to child charges.

"She could be sentenced on the negligent driving charge for 180 days, so we wouldn't see her for 181," Miller said, adding that he couldn't predict when she would be transferred to Kootenai County.

Germanton was not given a drug test after she was arrested on Tuesday, Miller said, adding that deputies had no legal authority to obtain one.

"There usually has to be legal standing, like for a DUI," he said. "There's nothing like that for abandoning your kids."

He acknowledged that Germanton does have an extensive history of drug use.

The last thing Germanton said she remembers, Miller said, was being at Wal-Mart with her children on Monday evening.

The Post Falls Police had responded to a call about Germanton and her kids at Wal-Mart at 8 p.m. on Monday, but didn't see reason to take action at the time.

According to the police report, the mother had been in the bathroom for half an hour with her children and a gas can and a mess of paper.

When questioned, she said she had run out of gas and had walked to Wal-Mart with her children, and she was expecting someone to pick them up. The paper was a torn-up origami gift.

"She was acting a little bizarre, but it was nothing out of the ordinary," said PFPD Chief Scot Haug.

Deputies are still trying to "work a timeline" of where Germanton went between Monday and Tuesday evenings, Miller said.

"They're looking at everything. Video surveillance at several different stores, contacting different folks who may have been in contact with her," he said.

A Jacklin Seed employee had reported dropping Germanton at a gas station near Pleasant View Road around 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Haug said on Wednesday the PFPD is turning the investigation over to the county, as the boys weren't discovered within the Post Falls city limits.

The PFPD does still intend to press charges against Germanton for the misdemeanor of obstructing justice, Haug said, after she hung up when called by law enforcement on Tuesday night.

"We had dozens of officers out there for a long period of time," Haug said. "It cost a lot of resources."
