Cyclists release official statistics of record attempt

An independent auditor has calculated the final numbers on what a group of Kootenai County cyclists accomplished in their attempts to set a world record.

The 10 athletes, who tried to set a record for miles biked in 24 hours on a paved track last month, covered 2,195 laps at .2781 miles per lap, the group revealed this weekend.

That comes to 610.43 miles.

The cyclists who participated in the record attempt included: Ian Martin, Greg Gervais, George Rohlinger, Mike Gaertner, Jeff Larson, Don Crawford, Bruce Johnson, Jason Johnston, Trent Munyer and Tom Lamphier.

Guinness World Records will be reviewing their submission for the record, Martin stated.

The cyclists' initial statements that they had biked 606 miles was only a rough estimation of distance, Martin has stated, based on cone placement on the track at Stateline Speedway.

The effort has also raised $41,500 for the Boys and Girls Club.

The athletes' initial target had been to bike 625 miles in 24 hours.

The group is trying to create a new record category, Martin said. Currently, the record for a solo cyclist to bike 24 hours on a paved surface is 561 miles.

They're trying to set a group record.
