In conjunction with National Memory Screening Day, Eagleview West Life Care Planning offers its third annual day of free screenings plus a health resources fair from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Sykes’ Restaurant in the conference center.

Sykes’ is located at 202 Second Ave. W. in Kalispell.

Jennifer Crowley, owner of Eagleview West Life Care Planning, said she will have four registered nurses to confidentially administer the memory screening tests.

“This can be an important first step in getting the ball rolling for addressing any concerns with your loved ones,” Crowley said. “Family members often recognize there may be a problem but don’t know where to start.”

By locating the event at Sykes’, she said people concerned about a loved one may casually go out for coffee or lunch, and then visit the health resources fair and memory screening. Screenings provide a safe intervention that can reassure healthy people and, when indicated, direct others to clinical resources.

Crowley described the test as a miniature cognitive screening called the General Practitioner’s Assessment of Cognition. She said it does not diagnose disease but indicates if someone should pursue a medical exam.

“It takes less than 15 minutes,” she said.

Last year, the nurses tested 61 people in nine hours. Of these, 13 were recommended for additional medical follow-up.

If desired by the people testing, those who score below threshold will receive a follow-up phone call to remind them to make an appointment for additional testing. Eagleview West Life Care Planning also offers to send a letter and a copy of the test to the person’s health care provider.

Crowley said a dozen businesses are participating in the health resources fair, and that the event includes free raffles and free goodies.

“Plan on having time to learn more, plus pick up free resources,” she said.

She called it a one-stop-shop for community-based services, educational information, caregiver support and more.

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America designated November as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month 10 years ago. An estimated 5.1 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease, and the incidence rate continues to grow.
