A 19-year-old Coeur d'Alene man was found unconscious in his jail cell in Lewiston and died, the Idaho State Police said in a news release Monday.
ISP officials said the investigation into Chad V. Gardner's Friday night death at the Nez Perce County Adult Detention Center is continuing.
The Spokane County Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy Monday, said ISP Det. Sgt. Vernon Grotjohn. Nez Perce County Coroner Gary Gilliam directed the autopsy.
"We're hoping to have preliminary (autopsy) information by Thursday," Grotjohn said.
Gardner was found after 11 p.m. Friday by Nez Perce County deputies doing routine prisoner checks, Grotjohn said. Gardner was pronounced dead at the jail some time before midnight by the Nez Perce County coroner, Grotjohn said.
First aid was administered once he was found unconscious, and Lewiston fire department emergency medical personnel responded to the facility, ISP said.
Grotjohn declined to say if Gardner was alone in his cell when he was found unresponsive.
Gardner was in custody in connection with a probation violation from a Kootenai County case, Grotjohn said.
He didn't know why Gardner was being held in Nez Perce County instead of Kootenai County, but he could have been sent there after being sentenced or because of overcrowding in Kootenai County.
Gardner was booked into the Nez Perce County Jail on Oct. 31, Grotjohn said.
Lt. Stu Miller, of the Kootenai County Sheriff's Department, said Gardner was arrested Sept. 18 for obstructing Coeur d'Alene police officers and for violating probation.
Miller said Gardner was on juvenile probation from previous cases.
