COEUR d'ALENE - A 19-year-old San Diego native was arrested early Friday morning after allegedly stealing a pair of trucks that resulted in a pursuit down Government Way with 26,000 pounds of steel falling into the roadway and one truck that crashed and burned.
Michael R. MacKinnon, who recently moved to Coeur d'Alene, is facing severalcharges from the alleged heist and chase, including theft, felony eluding, and driving under the influence, according to a press release from the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office.
MacKinnon reportedly stole the first pickup truck at 3 a.m. from the Target parking lot, at Highway 95 and Canfield Avenue, according to the release. The truck, which had a plow attached to the front, hit a parking barrier at some point, and deputies located the abandoned vehicle on Government Way, near Wilbur Avenue.
Deputies followed footprints in the snow leading away from the abandoned truck. As they followed the tracks, they witnessed a large flatbed truck crash through the gate of Pacific Steel, 7448 N. Aqua Circle. The flatbed truck drove northbound on Government Way, with deputies in pursuit.
At some point during the chase, two steel plates, equaling approximately 26,000 pounds, fell from the back of the truck onto Government Way, according to the release. The pursuit ended when the truck turned into a dead-end in the Juno Trailer Park in Hayden. The driver jumped from the moving truck and fled on foot, but the truck continued traveling and crashed into a house at the south end of North Loralee Street. The truck caught fire shortly after the crash, but deputies were able to put out the fire before it spread to the house.
KCSO and Coeur d'Alene Police officers chased the suspect on foot and took him into custody a short distance later.
"For some stupid reason he turned down this road," said Loralee Street neighbor Doug Berney, about the dead-end path. Berney woke up after the crash to police activity around the block. "I guess he thought he could ditch the police."
No one was in the house at the time of the crash and there were no injuries. The house suffered some structural damage due to the collision. Both stolen vehicles suffered significant damage and one KCSO patrol car suffered minor damage from hitting the steel that fell off the fleeing truck, the release states.
MacKinnon will make his first appearance in First District Court on Monday.
