PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lake City wins in opener

RATHDRUM - Leading by just four points after three quarters, Lake City pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Lakeland 54-40 in its season opener Tuesday night at Hawk Court.
Hailey Jackson led a balanced attack with 12 points for Lake City, in the debut of coach Bryan Kelly. Natalie Wheelock, Madi Farrell and Amber Hawkes each added 10 points for the Timberwolves.
"We had our moments, we had our opportunities going into the fourth quarter with a chance to win," Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. "Lake City stepped on the gas, and we kinda stepped on the brakes. But we're getting better, piece by piece."
Josie Coder scored 11 points for Lakeland (1-2), which travels to Coeur d'Alene on Thursday, a game pushed up a day to avoid conflict with the Vikings' state title game in football on Friday. Kacie Derby grabbed 12 rebounds for the Hawks.
Lake City plays host to Sandpoint on Friday.

COEUR d'ALENE - Sydney Williams had 20 points and six rebounds in three quarters as the Vikings beat the Bears in a nonleague season opener at Elmer Jordan Court.
"It was an overall team effort," Coeur d'Alene coach Dale Poffenroth said. "I thought our guards were aggressive defensively and they were fun to watch."
Madison Sumner had five steals and Caelyn Orlandi three assists for Coeur d'Alene (1-0), which hosts Lakeland on Thursday in a game rescheduled due to the Vikings playing in the state 5A football championship game on Friday.

SANDPOINT - Senior Hallie Gennett scored 23 points in her first game as a Trojan as Post Falls beat the Bulldogs at Les Rogers Court in the season opener for both teams.
Gennett, a transfer from University High in Spokane, hit 4 of 7 3-pointers, including a 24-foot buzzer beater at the end of the first half.
"I liked our effort and intensity, but we need to work on a few things," said Post Falls coach Marc Allert, praising the play of Gennett. "She came in, didn't try to force anything, and got great shots all night long."
Nikole Alamillo scored 13 points to lead Sandpoint.
Dani Failor added 14 points and eight rebounds, Brooke Litalien had 18 points, five steals and four assists and Lexi Smith had five points and five steals for the Trojans, who travel to Moscow next Tuesday.

HARRISON FLATS - Lakin Anxo scored 15 points as the Lumberjacks defeated the Warriors in a nonleague game.
"We played with them in the first half," Kootenai coach Mike LaFountaine said. "But we just couldn't get our offense going in the second half. Our boxing out and rebounding killed us, but I was proud of the way our girls played. We're getting better."
Ellison Schultz scored 13 points for Kootenai (1-2), which faces Clark Fork at the North Star League Tournament on Friday in Clark Fork at 6 p.m.
Kerstin Auer scored 11 points for St. Maries (1-1), which hosts Kellogg on Thursday.

PLUMMER - Natahnee Spencer, who has signed a letter-of-intent to play at Lewis-Clark State College next season, scored a game-high 18 points as the Wildcats beat the Knights in a nonleague game.
Lapwai finished third in last year's state 1A Division I tournament.
"It was a good first half, but it kind of got away from us in the second half," said Lakeside coach Stacey Sonder, in his first game as the Knights' girls coach. "Natahnee, she's a good floor general for them. It was a tough first game to start the season."
Christina Nilson scored 14 points, making four 3-pointers for Lakeside, which travels to the Highland (Craigmont) tournament on Friday.

SPIRIT LAKE - Junior post Jessica Norlander scored 18 of her career-high 22 points in the second half as the 3A Tigers defeated the 1A Division I Miners.
"She's tough to defend," Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. "We started getting the ball inside to her more in the second half."
Timberlake, in its season opener, trailed by one point at halftime, before outscoring the Miners (1-2) 15-3 in the third quarter.
"Defensively we started playing a lot better, and stopped giving up easy buckets," Miller said of the second half.
Sam Woody scored 10 of her 12 points in the first half for Wallace, which plays Mullan on Friday in the first round of the North Star League Tournament at Clark Fork. Jordan Browning had 12 rebounds for the Miners, Emily Nelson added 11 points and nine boards, and Stephanie Hill had six assists.
Timberlake is home vs. Sandpoint on Saturday.
