The 14th annual community Thanksgiving dinner organized by Mike and Vickie Hillicoss is set for noon to 2 p.m. at the Lake City Center.

Last year, more than 600 meals were served or delivered, and a similar turnout is expected this year.

It's not just about the free food, but the spirit and camaraderie, the chance to be with others on a national holiday.

"It's become an event," Hillicoss said. "It's become a celebration."

Families, seniors, teens, couples, and homeless will be among those arriving early and staying late.

"Our goal is always that everyone and anyone who can benefit from this meal, will," Mike Hillicoss said.

The menu this year will include 45 turkeys and 60 pies, along with the usual potatoes, gravy and vegetables. About 100 volunteers will prepare, set up, serve and clean up.

"It is really a community meal in the truest sense of the word," Hillicoss said.

Another 30 turkeys and 20 pies are needed by Friday.

Donations of food and money are being accepted, and volunteers are welcome.
