COEUR d'ALENE - A 35-year-old North Idaho woman on Tuesday was sentenced to four to 10 years in prison for vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.
Lisa M. Calbick faced a 10-year maximum prison sentence for the death of 77-year-old Don Graham, of Rathdrum. Calbick and Graham were drivers in an accident on Dec. 15, 2010, on Interstate 90.
Calbick was found guilty in August by a jury in 1st District Court in Kootenai County.
Calbick, who was sentenced by Judge Lansing Haynes, was immediately taken into custody.
Keren Graham, Graham's wife, said, "I thought the judge's ruling today was wise, just and most compassionate."
Kootenai County Deputy Prosecutor Art Verharen recommended a mandatory five years, with an additional five years indeterminate.
Graham was eastbound on I-90 about 3:30 p.m. on the day of the accident, traveling about 70 miles per hour, when Calbick, who also was eastbound, rear-ended him just east of the Washington-Idaho state line.
Graham was in a company car for work and headed back to his Post Falls office.
Witnesses said Calbick was speeding at 85 to 90 miles per hour and darting in and out of lanes just before the crash.
When she struck him, Graham lost control and his car flipped. He was pronounced dead at Kootenai Medical Center.
During the trial, Calbick's defense claimed she was hit by a mystery third car, and that impact propelled her into Graham's car. The defense and prosecution both called accident-reconstruction experts to testify.
Keren Graham thanked the prosecutor's office, police, witnesses and the jury for their contributions and professionalism.
"This is now closure, though the painful memories will remain," she said. "I hope Lisa Calbick will use this time to become a better person for her and society's sake."
