Taxi troubles

A Coeur d'Alene taxi company is worried about being targeted, after recent incidents of company cars being entered and vandalized.

"I'm getting really frustrated," said Tina Smith, manager of Scott's Taxi.

The five-year-old company recently filed a police report, Smith said, after experiencing three incidents with its cars in the past two weeks.

Two of their cabs, which have the company title on the sides, have been entered while the drivers briefly exited to see to customers, Smith said.

"We go into the bars, we're going into their houses. There are so many reasons we're in and out of the cars constantly," Smith said, adding that drivers don't always lock the cars when they step away. "We don't just sit in our cars and expect people to come to us."

In both incidents, which happened at night in downtown Coeur d'Alene, the drivers returned after several minutes to find the items in the car had been rummaged through and rearranged.

"No damage was done," Smith said.

A third company car was also recently spray painted all over its exterior, she said. The black car, tagged with white paint, had been parked at 12th and Wallace by the driver's house after the end of a shift, she said.

The drivers all take their cars home, Smith added.

While repainting the car will cost about $2,000, she said, she's more concerned that the vehicle will still be getting serviced on Thanksgiving.

"The holidays are definitely big. There are lots of tourists coming in to visit their families," Smith said, noting that the company has nine cars. "That's a lot of income we could stand to lose."

There is some concern that the incidents are specifically aimed at Scott's Taxi, Smith said.

But she wants the public to be aware, she said, in case the events are random.

"These are public streets. It happens to us, but it could be happening to anybody," she said.

The company has never had this issue before, Smith added.

A Coeur d'Alene Police spokesperson couldn't be reached on Thursday.

Other taxi and limousine companies in the area said they haven't experienced any vandalism issues.

Mike Maker, owner of Affordable Limo in Coeur d'Alene, said he makes an effort to avoid such situations by ensuring his limo is locked and covered when he isn't behind the wheel.

"That's my investment, that's my livelihood," Maker said. "I'm not going to leave it for some stranger to decide what's inside."

A good step for Scott's Taxi, he reasoned, might be to seek an extra pair of eyes.

"If they are parking the cars in public areas, I would maybe try to find areas that have cameras," he said.
