Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 12 years, 2 months AGO
CLARK FORK - It was a costly victory for Clark Fork, which cruised to a 47-34 win over Mullan in the championship game of the North Star League Tournament on Saturday.
Senior Dimi Kailang, arguably the best player in the North Star League, suffered a serious ankle injury in the third quarter, taking some of the joy out of a stellar tournament for the Wampus Cats (2-1).
Kailang posted 16 points, 11 rebounds, seven steals and three assists before the injury, which occurred with the Cats leading 42-19.
"League-wise, ball-handling-wise and scoring-wise, it (the injury) will hurt us," Clark Fork coach Dexter Vogel said. "Some of the girls are going to have to step up."
Tessa Vogel also posted a double-double for the Cats with 12 points and 10 boards. Annie Wurm added seven points, 10 rebounds and four steals, Lyndsie Kiebert eight points and four steals and Mariah Miller seven steals in the win.
"In the first half we were slow," said Vogel, whose team erupted for 22 third-quarter points. "After half I felt we moved the ball better and played much more under control."
Kami McKinnon led the Tigers with 21 points in defeat. Mullan used a 16-6 edge in the fourth quarter to make the game respectable, as the Cats were visibly shaken by the injury to their best player, who was writhing in agony on the bench before the paramedics arrived.
Clark Fork is at Coeur d'Alene Charter on Dec. 1.
