POLSON — On Wednesday, Nov. 7, the Webelos den of Pack 4947 met after school at Mrs. Ellis’ classroom for a scout meeting to earn the Communicator Achievement. A communicator is a person who shares information. Webelos are 4th and 5th grade Cub Scouts who are communicating through this article what Webelos means: WE’LL BE LOYAL SCOUTS! They are also sharing what they learned in their meeting about communication.

Jason, Austin, Ryan, Cody, Kieauneau and Mrs. Buffington walked from Linderman Elementary School to the North Lake County Public Library, where they met Isaac, Dothan, Mr. Stene and Mrs. Trosper, the Library’s Director.  Mrs. Trosper taught the Webelos about how to use the computer catalog to find a book or two.  The scouts learned that each book has a treasure map sticker with codes that match the information on the computer catalog.  They used the clues to find Jason’s favorite book, Fablehaven, by Brandon Mull.

Next, the scouts walked to the Lake County Leader where they met Bryce Gray, a journalist.  A journalist is someone who listens and takes notes about events or people and uses those notes to write news articles.  Mr. Gray uses his computer to create the layout, which has all the articles, pictures, captions and headings in the newspaper.  He asked who might want a job like his someday and Kieauneau rose his hand, which is a form of communication!

After visiting the Lake County Leader, the Webelos walked back to the library and played a body language game.  The game taught them a way of communicating feelings. Lastly, they wrote messages in code for their friends to crack. In summary, the Webelos cub scouts worked on six versions of communication:  code, spoken words, written words, sign language, body language and pictures. They earned the Communicator pin, which looks like a computer because many jobs in communications involve computers.
