SPOKANE VALLEY - An estimated 3,000 packed the Central Valley High gym Saturday night to watch 15th-ranked Oregon State beat Boise State 21-16 in a collegiate wrestling dual to retain possession of the "Border Axe."

Austin Moorhead of Oregon State pinned Scott Bacon in 2 minutes, 30 seconds at 174 pounds in the final match of the night to give the win to the Beavers. Moorhead reversed a takedown by Bacon and followed with the fall.

The dual, originally scheduled for Taco Bell Arena in Boise, was moved to Spokane with the help of John Owen, Central Valley wrestling coach and former North Idaho College coach.

John's son Brian Owen, a redshirt sophomore at Boise State, defeated Drew Van Anrooy 5-3 at 133 pounds. Owen is ranked 15th in the NCAA at his weight.

Boise State trailed 15-10 with three bouts left, but George Ivanov used a seven-point third period to earn an 11-5 decision over No. 9 RJ Pena at 157 pounds. Ivanov was up 6-5 with less than 10 seconds left and tacked on five more points with a takedown and three-point near fall as time expired.

Holden Packard, from Mountain View High in Meridian, followed Ivanov with a dramatic finish of his own. Packard was outscored 3-0 in the third period before using a reversal with five seconds left to get the 7-6 decision.

In what has potential to be a future NCAA final, No. 2 Jason Chamberlain of Boise State was upset by No. 4 Scott Sakaguchi at 149 pounds, 3-2. Sakaguchi escaped in the third period to earn his third point of the bout and played defense to hold off Chamberlain the rest of the way.

Boise State will get another shot at Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore., on Jan. 5. Both teams return to action this Friday and Saturday at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. NIC is one of the few junior colleges entered in the tourney, which is primarily for four-year schools.
