The dictionary defines diabetes mellitus as follows: "A chronic disease of pancreatic origin marked by insulin deficiency, excess sugar in the blood and urine, weakness and emaciation."

These few words describe a complex medical condition that can range from easily managed to almost impossible to control.

"Diabetes Awareness Month is a national effort to increase awareness about diabetes and the many people who are impacted by the disease," said Arturo Rojas, P.A.-C, Wahluke Family Clinic.

The American Diabetes Association says that nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes; 79 million more have pre-diabetes at an estimated annual cost of $174 billion. "

These numbers are staggering," Rojas said. "We want to educate people about their risk factors and also teach them to be on the alert for diabetes symptoms."

Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes include: Frequent urination, excessive thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss and increased fatigue and irritability.

Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes include any of the Type 1 symptoms plus frequent infections, blurred vision, cuts/bruises that are slow to heal, tingling/numbness in the hands/feet and recurring skin, gum, or bladder infections."

Rojas said it is important for patients to also know their risk factors which include: obesity, sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy eating habits, family history and genetics, increased age, high blood pressure and high cholesterol and a history of gestational diabetes.

"If you have one or more of these diabetes symptoms, you should see your medical provider right away," he said. "CBHA clinics, including Wahluke Family Clinic, have been recognized nationally for the diabetes care we provide. We help our patients manage their diabetes in order to live the fullest life possible."
