Whitefish-based travel specialist and photographer Don Nelson will give a presentation about the people and culture of Tibet at Flathead Valley Community College on Nov. 29.

Nelson spent six weeks as a member of a small Oxford University anthropological expedition in the remote Western Tibetan Plateau this year where he studied the relationship of Tibetan pilgrims to the material culture of the pilgrimage. Nelson’s presentation will offer the opportunity to view photos of the Tibetan landscape and hear his reflections on Tibet’s citizens. Nelson’s goal is to create a better understanding of and appreciation for the Tibetan culture.

Nelson has been traveling to and leading tours throughout Nepal, Sikkim, Tibet, Bhutan and Burma since 1999. In 2005, he sold his interest in a family business in Whitefish to focus on his passion for traveling. As a wilderness certified outdoor guide and wilderness first responder, he has led over 18 expeditions to the Himalayan region, including two expeditions to the Mount Kailash region, and is an experienced trekking guide and group leader.

Free and open to the public, the presentation will take place at 6 p.m. in room 144 inside the Arts and Technology Building on the college’s campus. For more information, contact Multicultural Affairs and Study Abroad Coordinator Mick Stemborski at 756-3945 or at mstembor@fvcc.edu.
