PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Tigers take lead early in victory over Bulldogs

SANDPOINT - Johnny Hayden scored a game-high 21 points and Timberlake built an early 12-3 lead and never trailed, downing Sandpoint 67-57 in a nonleague boys basketball opener at Les Rogers Court on Tuesday night.
Hayden finished 10 of 10 from the free-throw line and Trevor Masterson added 16 points for the Tigers (1-0), who were able to capitalize on a number of point-blank looks down low.
Matthew Burgstahler shot 7 of 9 from the field en route to 17 points to lead the Bulldogs (0-1), and Nick Nelson added 11.
The Bulldogs trailed by 15 points in the first half, before four late free throws by Collin Jurenka cut the lead to 35-24 at half.
Timberlake travels to Riverside next Tuesday.
Sandpoint hosts Colville on Saturday.

CHENEY - Tyrel Derrick hit his first five shots on his way to 22 points and six assists for the Hawks in a loss to the Blackhawks in the nonleague opener for both schools.
"For the first game of the year, we played pretty well," Lakeland assistant coach Bill Ryan said. "We didn't shoot great and there's work to be done defensively."
Alex Opland scored 13 points and Scott Simpson had seven rebounds for Lakeland, which travels to Bonners Ferry on Saturday.

BONNERS FERRY - Bryan Smith scored 15 points for the Panthers in an overtime win against the Badgers in the season opener for both schools.
"We got off to a great start with our pressure defense," Coeur d'Alene Charter coach Chris Pederson said. "I really think in the second half we got dead legs. We're not in game shape quite yet and it affected our defense and enabled them to get back in the game. Our guys really gutted it out and won the game."
Christian Pederson scored 13 points for Coeur d'Alene Charter, which hosts Clark Fork on Saturday at Holy Family Catholic School.
Evan Moe scored 13 points for Bonners Ferry.

"We're young and undersized," Lakeside coach Brad Calkins said. "We played hard and they're a big team, and we're just going to have to knock some shots down."
Jonathan Nomee scored 10 points and Sequioa Gallegos five points and seven rebounds for Lakeside, which hosts Troy on Thursday. Doug Schatz also had seven rebounds, and Leighton Boyd had four steals.
