COEUR d'ALENE - To get where the Lake City Timberwolves want to be in March, they've got to play the full 32 minutes.

On Wednesday night, it was a flat start to the second half that eventually doomed the Timberwolves in a nonleague game against the University High Titans.

Brett Bailey, who signed a letter of intent to play basketball at the University of San Diego two weeks ago, made 2 of 3 free throws after he was fouled as time expired to lift University past Lake City 66-65 at Lake City High.

Lake City (0-2) took the lead with 4.5 seconds remaining on a 3-point play by Riley Moreen, who tied it with a layup and made a free throw to give the Timberwolves a 65-64 lead. University inbounded the ball to Bailey, who drove down and drew a foul before time expired.

"It was up and down and in between," Lake City coach Jim Winger said. "I thought we played pretty good, but we're so spotty right now. If we want to do the things we want to do, we can't take a quarter off - and the third quarter just killed us. We went from nine up to seven down before the blink of an eye. They've got some players and some shooters."

"It was crazy," University coach Garrick Phillips said. "We had a nine-point lead and to let it dissolve on the free-throw line, I was really disappointed with our decision making and our defense and where we needed to be."

Lake City led 35-26 at halftime, but was outscored 20-6 in the third quarter. Bailey scored 16 of his game-high 26 points in the second half for the Titans, who were playing their season opener.

Justin Pratt scored 18 points for Lake City, which faces Blanchet in the Fitz Classic on Friday at Lewis and Clark High in Spokane at 9 p.m.

“I thought we got a lot of good things out of the game tonight,” Winger said. “Just when you’ve got a nine-point lead and come out flat, it just starts over again. We’re still a little scattered and with playing tough teams, it doesn’t get any easier on Friday and Saturday. We’re going to take some lumps, but we’re going to be battle tested by January.”

Kyle Guice had 15 points, seven rebounds and three blocks and Moreen 16 points and four rebounds for Lake City.

“I was really impressed with them,” said Phillips of Lake City. “We’ve seen a lot of them during the summer and fall league. They took care of the ball and their point guard (Pratt) does a good job of putting them in the right spots. They’re a solid team and I wish we were a little more at full strength, but in the long run it will do us some good to play a game like this.”
