Cuts for the cure

For the fourth year in a row, JN Couture Salon is turning a trim into a life line.
This Saturday, the Coeur d'Alene salon will once again devote all sales of the day to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, supporting breast cancer research and treatment.
"I've picked that as the cause of my business," said owner Jill Nelmar. "Giving up one day is not that big a deal, but it makes a big difference."
Customers can get all the usual cuts and stylings. All nine stylists will be stationed at the salon on Saturday, Nelmar said, prepared to donate every penny received to a good cause.
"They all donate their day for it," she said.
Vendors in town have also donated items that customers can win in a drawing that day, she added.
Breast cancer advocacy is personal for Nelmar, who lost her aunt and grandmother to the disease.
She hopes folks will be more tempted to give, she said, knowing that most donations to the Komen Foundation go toward local treatment efforts.
"It's not like going to a big fundraiser where you won't know what it's doing," she said. "You're helping your friends, your neighbors."
Nelmar has regular customers affected by the disease, she said, who have been grateful for the salon's support.
"They come to the event, and it breaks their heart in a positive way," she said. "It brings them to tears of joy that we do something that supports them."
About one in eight U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer, according to breastcancer.org. Besides skin cancer, it's the most commonly diagnosed cancer among young American women.
JN Couture Salon is located at 5417 North Government Way in Coeur d'Alene.

The salon's annual fundraiser has raised nearly $10,000 over the past few years, Nelmar said.
"Anyone can think they're small and it doesn't matter, but it does," she said. "Over time it adds up. To make a little influence is more than nothing."
