Names aren't just for hurricanes

COEUR d'ALENE - One of this year's storms will cut as sharp as a Diamond. Next year's will be exactly like, well, New Fallen Snow, and in 2014 snowfall will pound as hard as an NFL linebacker.
The storms bound to hit Coeur d'Alene over the next three years have names thanks to a group of sixth-grade students from Canfield Middle School, who named the winter blasts after themes.
This year, thanks to winning sixth-grader Bailey Yace, each storm will be named after rocks and minerals. That will be Amber, Basalt, Conglomerate, Gold and Diamond falling from the sky.
"It takes on its own life when you name it," said Tim Martin, street superintendent, on the program since 2000 that lets local kids name the snowfalls street crews will be plowing. "It takes on a personality."
It also makes note keeping a bit easier for the department. The amount of snow plowed, number of plows used and if any machinery broke down can all be jotted down under one catchy name, not boring old dates.
When did plow six break down? Saying Jan. 18 is too boring when you can just say "Hot Chocolate."
Plus, it raises awareness overall. Give it a name and, like with hurricanes, people will know something's coming.
To celebrate the winners, students climbed all over plows parked outside CMS Tuesday, and honked the big rigs' horns, which are loud enough to shake a home.
"We're just happy to be nominated," said Mackenzie Bunting, who along with classmate Jordan Nowoj named 2013's batch of storms with the theme "White Wonderland."
Next year's snow will be more in tune with Christmas actually, with names including Christmas, Egg Nog, Apple Cider and New Fallen Snow.
They chose their theme "because it's fun to play in the snow," Bunting said. The winning kids each received street signs with their names on it.
The street department averages seven city-wide plows and 11 arterial plows per winter.
How did Jared Harpar and Noah Bell come up with their idea of sports for 2014's theme?
"Because," they said in unison, "we both really like sports."
