YOUTH SPORTS: Junior tackle, select soccer, swimming and more

JUNIOR TACKLE

The Post Falls Vandals beat the Coeur d'Alene Chargers 42-6 in sixth-grade play. Tyler Maddox and Carson Daughenbaugh scored two touchdowns each for the Vandals, and Peyton Moe and Terran Sharbough scored one each.

Maddox had seven tackles, Sharbough six, Chandler Roberts five and Makiah Hueler three.

Dylan Paine rushed for 185 yards and three touchdowns as the Post Falls Seahawks beat the Coeur d'Alene Jaguars 28-0 in fifth-grade play to improve to 4-0.

Carey Sovereign also rushed for a touchdown, Brennen Froelich rushed for 48 yards on five carries and also had seven tackles and a forced fumble. Terrel Mitchell had three sacks and Eriah Borum, Eli Gondo and Cameron Sessions had four tackles each.

The previous week, Paine rushed for 238 yards and five touchdowns on 14 carries, and also had eight tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery as the Seahawks beat the Steelers 34-24.

Wyatt Shelly passed for 261 yards and five touchdowns as the Post Falls Ducks beat the Silver Valley Storm 58-0 in a sixth-grade game.

Jake Rutherford had two touchdown catches and ran for one score, Shilo Morgan had two TD catches, Tyler Smart and Joel Sovereign each had one TD run, Kyle Young had one TD reception and Jake Glenn returned an interception for a touchdown. Andrew Trump and Dakota Portanova also had interceptions for the Ducks.

The Rams, led by the play of offensive linemen Jaxon Frank, Jax Taylor, Tristen Carpita, Jonny Racine and Cameron Chun, defeated the Post Falls Trojans in eighth-grade play.

Kyle Kazmerski scored on a 55-yard run for the Rams. Dawson (Buzz) Schramn sparked the defensive effort in the win.

SELECT SOCCER

Coeur d'Alene Sting boys under-12 (Ajax): The Sting beat the Spokane Sabers (Rau) 3-0 last Saturday. Greyden Lee, Denton Meijerink and JR Rayborn each scored one goal, Denton Meijerink had one assist and Bennett Cunningham posted the shutout in goal.

Sting U14 boys: The Sting blanked Monroe FC 2-0 on Saturday to remain undefeated in PSPL play. The Sting improved to 5-0 with goals scored by Caleb Kraut and Cole Fawcett. Travis Swallow had both assists.

Sting U9 boys (United): The Sting lost 6-1 to the Sandpoint Strikers U10 team last Saturday. Cooper Prohaska scored for the Sting.

Sting U13 boys: The Sting tied the Cheney Storm (Brickey) 2-2 on Sept. 22. Marco Rojo and Kieran Graham each scored a goal for the Sting.

On Sept. 29, the Sting defeated the Sabers (Rice) 3-1. Sean McKeeken, Colvin Dunteman and Alex Garcia each scored in the win. Later that day, the Sting lost to the Pullman Pumas 4-2. Marco Rojo and Devon Sheehan each scored once for the Sting.

Sting U10 girls Real: The Sting lost 3-2 at Pullman on Sept. 23 in Northwest League play. Molly Foster and Myah Rietze each scored for the Sting.

Idaho Thunder U10 boys (Sater): The Thunder won three PSPL games over the weekend to remain undefeated.

On Friday night the Thunder defeated the Spokane Pumas Black 3-1 at the South Complex in Spokane. Thunder goals were scored by Andrew Ferreira, Aiden Juntilla and Braden Ferreira. Alex Moate had one assist.

On Saturday the Thunder defeated the Spokane Scotties (Hippauf) 6-1 at Dwight Merkel Field in Spokane. Devin Claflin scored a hat trick, and Aiden Juntilla, Andrew Ferreira and Aidan O'Halloran each scored once. Andrew Ferreira, Cody Carvajal, Ayden Tweedy and Aiden Juntilla each had assists.

Finally, the Thunder defeated the Spokane Pumas Black 7-0 at River City Middle School in Post Falls. Aidan O'Halloran and Alex Moate each scored twice, and Ethan Lawson, Devin Claflin and Cody Carvajal each scored once, with Carvajal scoring on a header off a corner kick. Assists were made by Cody Carvajal, Aiden Juntilla and Aidan O'Halloran.

Thunder U11 boys: The Thunder blanked the Sandpoint Strikers 7-0. Gavin McLuskie scored a hat trick in the second half, Jalen Skalskiy scored twice, and Alex Lycan and Tristan Delbridge each scored once. Seth Neely and Max Smith teamed for the shutout in goal.

Thunder U13 boys (Gelnette/McLuskie): On Saturday morning, the Thunder lost to FC Spokane Black Vela 2-0. Saturday afternoon, the Thunder tied the Breakers Brown '99 2-2 with goals by Caleb McLuskie and Robby Butterfield. Assists were by Robby Butterfield and Isaiah Higbee.

On Sunday morning, they tied Xifa 2018 0-0 with Zack Nall having 14 saves in goal. On Sunday afternoon, the Thunder beat the Spokane Pumas '99 Black 4-1 with two goals by Braeden Gelnette and one goal each by Braden Claflin and Zack Nall.

Thunder U13/14 boys (Saenz): The Thunder battled to a 2-2 tie with the Spokane Breakers. Dakota Curtis scored with an assist by Brandon Jewell for the Sting, and Zack Leens scored, assisted by Braeden Darwood.

Thunder U14 girls (Foster): The Thunder beat the Moscow United 7-1 in Moscow. Baili Martin scored with an assist by Melodee Skalskiy, Katelyn Knaack scored unassisted, Maddie Cabe booted one in with the assist from Elisa James off a corner kick, Melodee Skalskiy also scored unassisted, Cierra Foster scored unassisted, Isis Rich got her second goal of the season unassisted, and Emily Parson finished one off with an assist from Lily Little.

Thunder U12 girls (Siers): The Thunder beat the Spokane Scotties 6-1. Grace Hammond and Maddy Lasher each scored twice, and Bethany Gilmore and Taylor Burrell each scored once.

Thunder U12 girls (Meyer): The Thunder beat the Hermiston Heat 5-0 in Pasco, Wash. Maddy Lasher scored a hat trick and Bethany Gilmore and Lauren Hoffeld each scored once. Georgiana Simpson posted the shutout in goal.

Thunder U10 girls (Moate): The Thunder beat the Spokane Scotties (Klein) 5-0. Kaylee Moate scored a hat trick and Ashlyn Maag and Kendall Pickford each scored once. Emily Ray notched the shutout in goal.

Sting U13 girls (Tottenham): The Sting defeated the Idaho Thunder (Craig/Anderson) 2-0 on Sunday. Abigail Ellison scored early in the game off a corner kick from Kimber Burgin. Kimber Burgin scored late the game. Alecia Rollins had three saves in goal for the shutout.

Lakeland Nighthawks U10 boys (Mooney): Ethan Garitone scored a hat trick as the Nighthawks beat the Coeur d'Alene Sting Sounders 9-1 in Northwest League play last Wednesday at Betty Kiefer Elementary in Rathdrum. James Kelly, Dawson Marsh, Ammon Munyer, Ronald Rojas, Wade Scott and Josiah Shields each added one goal.

On Saturday, the Nighthawks beat the Idaho Thunder 7-0 in league play at River City Middle School in Post Falls. Josiah Shields scored two goals in the win and Ethan Garitone, James Kelly, Dawson Marsh, Ron Rojas and Wade Scott each scored once. Ron Rojas, Dawson Marsh and Ethan Garitone teamed for the shutout in goal.

Sting U12 girls: Team Newcastle, coached by Tait Engebretsen, started their fall league with a 3-0 win over Lakeland and a 1-0 loss to the SSC Shadow Elite.

SWIMMING

Nicole Rozier of Coeur d'Alene broke school records in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100 backstroke at a meet last Saturday at the University of Idaho pool in Moscow.

Rozier was second in the 100 butterfly in 1:01.06, lowering her own record of 1:01.21. She won the 100 backstroke in 1:03:59, breaking the previous record of 1:03.77 set by Whitney Heleker in 2006.

"The team demonstrated courage and stamina by overcoming a severe cold that crippled us these last few days," Viking coach Rich Swoboda said.

Coeur d'Alene travels to Sandpoint today.

JV SOCCER

Coeur d'Alene finished its season last week with two wins and a loss.

On Sept. 25 the Vikings beat Lewiston 5-1 at home. Andrew Nicklay scored in the seventh minute on an assist from Cole O'Brien. Kenny Brown scored in the 22nd minute, with an assist to Nicklay. Lewiston tallied a goal in the 27th minute. O'Brien scored for Cd'A in the 33rd minute. Pete Rau scored in the 46th minute on an assist from Lane Thompson. Sam Parsons ended the scoring on an unassisted goal in the 75th minute.

Last Thursday Coeur d'Alene won 1-0 at Moscow. Nicklay scored the only goal of the game off an assist from Brown. Mitchell Kamphaus posted the shutout in goal.

The Vikings finished up the season last Saturday with a 3-0 loss to Lake City.

Coeur d'Alene finished the season with a 9-3-4 record.

Basketball signups: The Coeur d'Alene Recreation Department will register today through Friday for its third- through fifth-grade boys and girls basketball leagues.

The program is set to begin approximately Oct. 22 and run through December. Games and practices are held weekdays and Saturdays at local schools. Cost is $26 for city residents and $31 for non-city residents.

Registration is at the Coeur d'Alene City Hall, 710 Mullan Avenue. Sponsors and coaches are also needed. Registration for sixth- through eighth-grade boys and girls will be held Oct. 15-24 and start the second week of November. The kindergarten through second-grade program will register in January.
