Duane Albert Daugharty, M.D., 87, passed away Sept. 14, 2012, at home surrounded by his loving family. Dr. Daugharty was born June 17, 1925, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Gordon and Ruby Wilson Daugharty.

He spent his early childhood in Sandpoint and Clark Fork. He moved with his family to Montana where he attended Troy Grade School and graduated from Libby High School. He enlisted in the Navy during World War II, serving in the Pacific. Following discharge he attended Butte School of Mines and graduated from Carroll College. He attended St. Louis School of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency at St. Louis City Hospital where he served as Chief Resident.

He married Miriam Gooselaw, the love of his life, in 1947 while attending Carroll College. They moved to Coeur d’Alene from St. Louis, Mo., in 1959 after he completed his residency. Dr. Daugharty was an active member of the medical staff at Kootenai Medical Center where he cared for the patients of North Idaho for more than 43 years. He was instrumental in starting the first Coronary Care unit at the hospital. He served as Chief of Staff at both Lake City Hospital and Coeur d’Alene General Hospital prior to serving as Chief of Staff at Kootenai Medical Center. Dr. Daugharty was a member of the Kootenai Medical Board of Trustees from 1978 to 2008 and served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees from 1994 to 2003. He was a past president of the Idaho Heart Association. He was a member of the Idaho Medical Association serving a leadership role. He was named Idaho Hospital Trustee of the Year in 2003.

Dr. Daugharty was preceded in death by his wife, Miriam and son, Duane. He is survived by daughters (and spouses), Barbara (Howard Sterner), Jan, Susan (Brad Fowler) and son, Paul of Coeur d’Alene; daughters, Stacey (Matt Wacker) of Lake Forest Park, Wash., and Amy (Tom Hoffmann) of Boise; his grandchildren, Jessica and Sara Sterner (Shawn Shafer), Brooke and Erin Fowler, Katie, Emma and Jack Daugharty, Connor Hoffmann and Daniel Wacker; his sister, Ida Hawkins; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, Hayden Lake Country Club, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Rotary and the Elks Lodge.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Drs. James Osmanski, James Pataky and Michael James as well as to the nursing staff of Kootenai Medical Center for their compassionate care during his last illness.

The memorial Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, 919 Indiana Ave., Coeur d’Alene, with a reception to follow at The Coeur d’Alene Resort.
