With his team's season on the line, Coeur d'Alene's Matt Hulquist had his senior moment, blasting a shot past Lake City goalkeeper Tanner Horton as the second-seeded Vikings defeated the third-seeded Timberwolves 2-0 in a 5A Region 1 boys soccer tournament semifinal match at Coeur d'Alene High on Wednesday.

Coeur d'Alene (9-4-3), which lost to Lake City 4-1 at Coeur d'Alene High five days ago, ended the Timberwolves' (7-5-3) season in the match.

"It was a bit of a circus today," Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Lake said. "But it usually is when we play each other. We were embarrassed when we lost to them here on Saturday. This was a redemption game for us and we did some different things with our lineup and put some guys in different places. We didn't know if it would work, but we were going to make adjustments from that."

Elsewhere, top-seeded Post Falls (13-1-1) defeated Lewiston 8-0 in the other semifinal and will host the Vikings on Monday at 3:30 p.m. - with the winner advancing to the state 5A tournament Oct. 18-20 at either Post Falls or Coeur d'Alene High.

Lewiston finishes 4-12.

Coeur d'Alene 2, Lake City 0: Scoreless 27 minutes into the first half, Coeur d'Alene's Hulquist found an opening and didn't miss - scoring the first goal from 20 yards out.

"It was unbelievable," Lake said. "It was an unbelievable shot and rip. It was unsavable. Graison (Le) had a heck of a shot there (at Lake City on Sept. 13), but that's in the play when it is right at his foot and from where he was — it was just an unsavable shot.”

“I haven’t hit a lot of those in a game,” Hulquist said. “It was a good game and we played well. It was an amazing game. On that shot, I wasn’t thinking about too much. It kind of went silent for me.”

Lake City had chances late in the match to tie, but saves by Keagan Shillington kept them off the scoreboard.

“This was a tough one,” Lake City coach Chad Beadell said. “It is what it is. It was the last game of the season — now for us, but it could have been for them too. It’s just one of those things that sucks. Matt had a heck of a shot and the last shot was a heartbreaker for us.”

Le received a red card with 15 minutes remaining in the match for arguing with officials on a foul inside the penalty box. Due to receiving his fifth card of the season — Le is out for Monday’s match, but is eligible to return after.

Lake City had qualified for the last two state tournaments.

“The last time state was here (2007), we got two automatic berths,” Beadell said. “Good luck to both Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls. This senior class has given me more effort than any other class I’ve had. I just can’t thank them enough.”

First half — 1, Cd’A, Matt Hulquist (unassisted), 27:00. Second half — 2, Cd’A, Dillon Dunteman (Jake Sweeney), 76:00.

Saves — LC, Tanner Horton 3; Cd’A, Keagan Shillington 5.

Post Falls 8, Lewiston 0: Junior Timmy Mueller had four goals and an assist as the Trojans whipped the Bengals in the other semifinal at Post Falls High.

“I knew they were going to come out hard and it was 7-0 after 35 minutes,” Post Falls coach Gabe Lawson said. “It was a really good exhibition of how much the boys wanted to win today.”

Nathan White had two goals and an assist and Reece Jackson one goal and two assists for Post Falls.
