After 62 minutes Thursday, Lake City broke a scoreless tie on what Timberwolves coach Matt Ruchti called the best play of the day.

Freshman Sydney Quimby took a pass from sophomore Meaghan Bare, bounced a shot off the post and scored on the rebound from right in front of the goal to give the second-seeded Timberwolves a 1-0 lead and eventual victory against the third-seeded Coeur d'Alene Vikings in a semifinal match of the 5A Region 1 girls soccer tournament at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex at Lake City High.

"We knew it was going to be tough today," Ruchti said. "We needed to play as many minutes as it took to get it done, and they did that today. We had a good work ethic today."

Elsewhere, the top-seeded Post Falls Trojans defeated fourth-seeded Lewiston 1-0, holding the visiting Bengals without a shot on goal for their first regional tournament win since moving up to the 5A level in 2006.

"Defensively, we were really strong," Post Falls coach Briggs Anderson said. "But it was our offense that really held them. We were attacking the entire game. They made it to midfield a few times in the first half, but it was hard for them to cross in the second half."

Lake City (6-5-4) will face Post Falls (10-6) in the regional championship match on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Post Falls High.

"They're a very good group with a lot of good athletes," Ruchti said of Post Falls. "They've got some of the best kids in the area and it's going to be a tough match. We split with them earlier this year and we've got to stay focused. We're at their place, but hopefully we can give them a good run."

Coeur d'Alene finishes 5-8-2.

Lewiston, which won the regional title last year, finishes 2-10-4.

Tuesday's winner advances to the state 5A tournament, held at both Coeur d'Alene and Lake City high schools, with the loser moving onto a play-in game next Saturday at Middleton High.

Lake City 1, Coeur d'Alene 0: After the teams played to a scoreless tie in last Saturday's regular-season finale, the only goal in Thursday's match was scored with only 18 minutes remaining in regulation.

"It went out wide to an outside back (Bare), who slipped it into the middle and went outside (to Quimby), who hit it on the back line, who hit the gaps and hit the right spot,” said Ruchti of the goal. “She’s a freshman that doesn’t play like a freshman. She’s had some good goals and worked hard on it. She deserves those types of plays.”

“Everything went by so fast,” Quimby said. “I didn’t really see anything and was just making my run. It was either moving on or not, so it was big for us today.”

Wind was also a factor, with winds causing a handful of shots to change directions throughout the match.

“We knew CHS likes to play very direct and it puts a lot of pressure on our back line,” Ruchti said. “And I thought our back line was good today. Our goalkeeper (Tiegan Horton) was solid the entire game and made saves when she was supposed to. But I thought our back line was very clean on the ball. Our training showed on the field and we were successful.”

Madi Williams had seven saves for Coeur d’Alene.

“I thought she did a phenomenal job,” Coeur d’Alene coach Tarragh Carr said. “That goal wasn’t her breakdown and it was a team-allowed goal. It’s just an unfortunate outcome. Our girls wanted it bad and we wanted it for them. I thought we did a good job of preparing them for the game, but came up on the losing end.”

First half — none. Second half — 1, LC, Sydney Quimby (Meaghan Bare), 62:00.

Shots on goal — Cd’A 5, LC 8.

Saves — Cd’A, Madi Williams 7; LC, Tiegan Horton 5.

Post Falls 1, Lewiston 0: Kelcie Hedge scored in the 28th minute to lift the Trojans past the Bengals, eliminating last year’s regional champion.

“The biggest thing for us was the fact that we’d never won a game (in the 5A Region 1 tournament),” Anderson said. “We’ve put so much emphasis on this. It was just another hurdle we had to get over. We just had a lot going against us and we just overcame it.”

First half — 1, PF, Kelcie Hedge (unassisted), 28:00. Second half — none.

Shots on goal — Lew 0, PF 19.

Saves — Lew, Katie Daugherty 14; PF, Sam Runkle 0.
