Holmberg nets 2 as Chiefs bottle Rockets

KELOWNA, British Columbia - Mitch Holmberg scored his second goal of the night midway through the third period as the Spokane Chiefs defeated the Kelowna Rockets 6-4 in Western Hockey League action Wednesday night in front of 4,781 at Prospera Place.

Holmberg opened the scoring in the first period on a power-play goal and Liam Stewart added a short-handed goal to give Spokane a 2-0 lead.

Dylan Walchuk scored on a tip of a Collin Valcourt shot to take a 3-0 lead 4:51 into the second.

Kelowna scored two goals in the final five minutes of the period and tied the game at 3 on a goal by Dylan McKinley.

Mike Aviani scored his fifth goal in six games to give Spokane a 4-3 lead midway through the period and Valcourt capped the scoring on an empty-netter in the final minute.

Eric Williams had 39 saves for Spokane (5-1-0-0 10 points), which travels to Kamloops on Friday.
