SALT LAKE CITY - A North Idaho College miscue led to the tying goal by the Salt Lake Community College club team, and the hosts scored twice more in the next 13 minutes to take command and deal the Cardinals a damaging 3-2 loss on Friday.

Eliseo Santana scored on the rebound in the 28th minute for NIC (4-6-3) to open the scoring. But a turnover led to the tying goal by Salt Lake's Lewis Berbediem in the 52nd minute, and Salt Lake added goals in the 56th and 65th minutes.

"We had a real good first half," NIC coach Ken Thompson said. "The second half we had a bad giveaway and it affected us. We responded emotionally instead of professionally. Instead of working through it as a team, we tried to do it individually."

NIC played without freshman Logan Tooley, its leading scorer, who had his appendix removed last Saturday. He is out for the rest of the regular season, Thompson said.

As for the rest of the Cardinals, another loss would eliminate NIC from postseason contention. NIC plays FC Utah today in Provo, Utah, and must go at least 2-0-1 over its final three games to reach the .500 mark needed to qualify for the district tournament.

"In the first half we counted four shots inside 10 yards, where it was just us and the keeper, that we didn't finish," Thompson said. "We created opportunities, but we didn't finish them off."

EPHRAIM, Utah - The visiting Cardinals, ranked No. 6 in the NJCAA, avoided a stumble by rallying past the Badgers 20-25, 23-25, 25-14, 25-20, 15-13 in Scenic West Athletic Conference play.

HayleeMae Dennis led NIC (17-2, 4-2 SWAC) with 13 kills, and Marissa Verduci had 11 kills. Yang Yang had 12 kills, eight blocks and four aces, and Kaitlyn Molloy had 15 digs. Brooklyn Bradbury had 27 assists.

"I am extremely happy to see the girls come back and win that game," NIC coach Kandice Gregorak said. "During the second and third sets, I basically told them we need to leave this gym with a win. I was very excited to see them finish the game. I truly believe we have more in us."

Snow slipped to 12-7, 2-4.

NIC plays at fifth-ranked Salt Lake today. Salt Lake (19-5, 4-2) lost 22-25, 25-18, 25-12, 25-19 to third-ranked and SWAC-leading Southern Idaho (21-1, 6-0) on Friday in Salt Lake City.
