PREP VOLLEYBALL: St. Maries claims 2A District 1-2 title

MOSCOW - Mariah Gladden had 19 kills and Lakin Anxo 17 kills, 11 digs and two blocks as the St. Maries Lumberjacks defeated the Grangeville Bulldogs 25-16, 25-11, 22-25, 25-22 to win the 2A District 1-2 tournament on Thursday at Bear Den.
St. Maries (18-13) won its seventh straight district title - the previous six coming in the 3A Intermountain League - and will open the state 2A tournament next Friday at 10 a.m. at Hillcrest High in Idaho Falls.
"We started out a little slow and maybe underestimated them (Grangeville) a little bit," St. Maries coach Missy Asbury said. "You could definitely tell they wanted to win and in that third game, they outplayed us. In the last game, we picked it up and I thought Lakin had an excellent game, as well as Mariah (Gladden) and Kathy (Epler)."
Epler had 44 assists, Maddie McQueen 15 digs and Kylee Glidden two aces for St. Maries.
After Orofino eliminated Coeur d'Alene Charter (2-16), Grangeville beat Orofino to advance to a play-in match Saturday in Cascade.

CLARK FORK - Mariah Miller served up eight aces to go with six kills as the No. 2 seed Wampus Cats ended Kootenai's season with a 25-7, 25-19, 25-19 victory in the 1A Division II volleyball tournament opener.
Clark Fork (11-9) plays at No. 1 Mullan (11-1) on Saturday at noon for the district title and a berth to state.
Ellison Schultz tallied two kills, six assists and two blocks, and Brie Benson and Camille Grubham added two kills apiece for Kootenai (3-11).

MOSCOW - Liz Bookamer had six kills and four aces for the Royals in a 25-15, 25-13, 25-20 Mountain Christian League loss to the Knights.
Sarah Ployhar had 10 assists for North Idaho Christian (10-7, 8-6 MCL), which travels to Christian Center of Hayden on Tuesday.
