COEUR d'ALENE - Now that they're in the state 5A playoffs, Coeur d'Alene coach Shawn Amos feels it's anyone's game from here on out.
Coeur d'Alene, the two-time defending state champion, defeated the Lewiston Bengals 34-7 in a state 5A football playoff play-in game on Friday at Viking Stadium.
"We get to host a first-round game, which is always huge for us," Amos said. "We're excited, but it's going to be a tough battle from here on out."
Coeur d'Alene (7-2) will host Rocky Mountain (6-3) of Meridian, the No. 4 team from District 3, next Friday at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the state 5A playoffs.
The Vikings took a 14-0 lead after the first quarter on touchdown runs of 8 yards by Gunnar Amos and 41 yards by by Reece Mahaffy.
"We were unable to throw the football for a bunch of different reasons," Shawn Amos said. "The weather, Lewiston, whatever the case might be, but both Reece and Gunnar were a handful running the ball tonight. That was nice to see and nice to be able to grind a game out."
Mahaffy finished with 147 yards rushing, with Amos finishing with 139 as well as completing 12 of 24 passes for 109 yards. Chase Blakely had six catches for 53 yards for Coeur d’Alene.
“For us seniors, this could have been our last game,” Mahaffy said. “You never want to lose, so we kept it going. We just kept fighting and got back to state. We really played hard and it showed.”
Ty Holgate also ran for 57 yards and Marques Mort 38 yards for Coeur d’Alene, which outgained the Bengals 381-61.
“I think we’ve got to do both to be successful next week,” Amos said. “We’ve been able to throw in some games and run in others. Whatever is going to give us success, we need to do.”
Lewiston quarterback Cole Zacha, who had missed the previous seven games due to a broken leg, returned after Drew Melton was knocked out of the game in the first quarter with a quad injury.
“Most of our packages were for Drew tonight,” first-year Lewiston coach Shawn Nilsson said. “We had a partial week with Cole and our idea wasn’t to throw him back in. We had some stuff in for him, but he was really limited with his mobility tonight.”
Zacha finished the game 200 yards passing for Lewiston, which finishes 3-5.
“Our kids played hard, but we just had some bad breaks early on,” Nilsson said. “Our first couple of defensive possessions weren’t very good and then we played well, but we just started to run out of bodies.”
