NIC ROUNDUP: Cardinal wrestling team edged by Great Falls

GREAT FALLS, Mont. - The University of Great Falls won the last two matches to hand North Idaho College a rare wrestling loss, 17-15 on Saturday afternoon.
"I'd like to have a couple of those matches back," NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. "But for the first outing (Friday and Saturday), the guys wrestled well."
Brock Banta (125), Jeremy Golding (149), Nicholas Moreno (157), Kyle Sweedman (174) and Caleb Rivera (184) each won by decision for NIC (1-1), which hosts Highline Community College of Des Moines, Wash., next Saturday.
"We don't like to lose," Whitcomb said, "but this is the kind of competition we have to wrestle early, so we can grow a little bit."

COEUR d'ALENE - Yang Yang had 14 kills and eight digs as the Cardinals, ranked No. 8 in the NJCAA, beat the Spartans 25-5, 25-19, 25-12 at Christianson Gym in the Scenic West Athletic Conference and regular season finale for both teams.
Brooklynn Bradbury had 26 assists for NIC (20-4, 6-4 SWAC), which finished tied for third in the conference with Snow College (16-8, 6-4). Snow upset third-ranked Salt Lake Community College in five games Saturday.
"The team played great today and I'm very happy with our season this far," NIC coach Kandice Gregorak said. "We need two wins on Friday night to get to nationals and nationals is what we play for all season. I know the kids will be ready. It will be a battle, that's for sure."
The Region 18 tournament begins Friday at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls. No. 3 seed North Idaho plays No. 6 Colorado Northwestern (0-23, 0-10) at 9 a.m. PDT. The winner plays No. 2 Salt Lake (22-6, 7-3) at 3 p.m. for a trip to nationals. The winner also advances to Saturday's regional championship match.
No. 4 Snow plays No. 5 Utah State University-Eastern (11-16, 2-8) on Friday at noon. That winner plays No. 1 seed and third-ranked CSI (27-1, 10-0) at 6 p.m. for a trip to nationals.

SPOKANE - Former Sandpoint High standout Ellie Engel headed in a cross from Kellsi Parson in the 77th minute for the equalizer for the Cardinals in their regular-season finale.
Lauren Bonck headed in a corner kick from Amanda Minter in the 57th minute for the Gonzaga club team.
"The weather affected the match as it was tough to control passes on the wet turf," NIC coach Dan Hogan said. "Both teams played well defensively as well, making it tough to even get a good look on goal for a shot."
NIC 9-3-2 heads to Cheyenne, Wyo., to play in the NJCAA District B tournament. The Cardinals face Laramie County Community College in a semifinal match on Friday.
