SUPERIOR - The Superior Bobcat football team got beat out of the gate on Saturday – quickly giving up a touchdown in the first quarter to Centerville.

But that was the only time they got beat.

The Bobcats quickly rebounded when senior quarterback Billy Smith connected with fellow senior Adam Kay for a 65-yard touchdown.

From there, Superior didn’t look back.

"It was good to be clicking on all cylinders in the playoffs," Head Coach Allen Labbe said. "We executed offensively pretty well as you can see from the stats."

All cylinders were firing on offense, especially in the potent duo of Kay and Smith.

Smith found Kay repeatedly during the game, resulting in Kay netting 243 of the Bobcat’s total 339-yards in the air.

When Centerville’s pass coverage was solid, Smith simply found a gap and ate up yards on the ground – running for 105-yards on 16 attempts.

The quarterback also utilized every weapon in his arsenal, including junior Anthony Parkin, who went for 51-yards in seven attempts.

"He is amazing," Coach Labbe said. "He is barely 100 pounds but he don’t care."

According to Coach Labbe, the only "real disappointment" of the game was incurred penalties.

"We had way more penalties then we have in the past," Coach Labbe said. "We’ve been having games with five to 15 yards of total penalties, which is where we want to be. We had 10 penalties for 73 yards – some of them were kicks out of bounds, but a penalty is a penalty."

But as quickly as he mentioned penalties, Coach Labbe changed to talking about the turnover ratio.

"Turnovers were great – not a single turnover," Coach Labbe said. "That was pretty exciting. We won the game of turnovers."

Coach Labbe also mentioned the offensive line as being a major key to in the game against Centerville.

"Even though they average about 165 pounds, they will stand toe to toe with anyone," Coach Labbe said. "They block well and you really can’t say enough about them."

The foundation of the offensive line, center Josh Goins, was specifically mentioned by Coach Labbe.

"Josh Goins has not had a bad snap all year," Coach Labbe said. "When you think about it, we snap shotgun 99 percent of the time and he hasn’t had one bad snap."

In the final minutes of the fourth quarter the Bobcats had a commanding lead and Coach Labbe decided it was time to bring the junior varsity squad in.

"We really didn’t want to run it up or nothing like that," Coach Labbe said. "It was exciting to see Vincente – he hasn’t missed a practice all year – get in a playoff game and score a touchdown. That is the kind of stuff you call grandma about."

The Bobcats beat Centerville 66-20 and will face Broadview/Lavina Saturday at home.

"We have a team coming here that runs the ball – they don’t throw as much as the team we just played," Coach Labbe said. "We thought our pass defense did great. You don’t want to say ‘we don’t have to worry about the pass’ because they are capable. Just not as good at it as Centerville. We are going to work on defensive strategies and going against their option scheme."

Coach Labbe added that defensive schemes will be critical in the game since the opposition has a size advantage.

But size doesn’t seem to matter much for the Bobcats, who display the heart of a champion every time the step on the field.

"We got 18 kids left, we lost a few here and there, but these 18 kids are rock solid," Coach Labbe said. "They want to be there, they have fun being there. You can’t ask for anything better than that."
