Did you know that there is a way to protect children's teeth when they are young? Many people do not realize that most childhood tooth decay is preventable. With a combination of sealants, fluoride and regular cleanings your child can get a great head start with his or her dental health. Sealants protect the fissures and grooves that are found on the chewing surface of the tooth, fluoride protects the smooth surfaces of the tooth, and regular cleanings and checkups help keep your child's mouth healthy with the benefit of beginning a lifelong habit of dental care. Dental sealants are one of the first steps to a healthy mouth.

Sealants are placed by dripping a plastic-like covering over the surface of the tooth that effectively fills the fissures and grooves on the tooth's surface. This cover provides a protective shield against bacteria and plaque that could otherwise become trapped and cause tooth decay. What's more, the process of applying these sealants does not remove any tooth structure, does not require the use of a drill, is quick and is completely pain free.

Sealants are most commonly placed on children's permanent back teeth because these teeth are more prone to cavities. It is best to apply sealants as soon as the teeth erupt, before they have a chance to decay. They can also be placed on healthy adult teeth. After sealants are placed they can last up to 10 years. Ask your dentist to check them at your regular visits, and if they do wear down they can be easily replaced if the tooth is still free of decay.

Applying dental sealants is one of the best preventative things both children and adolescents can do to preserve their natural teeth. Sealants offer extra protection, but do not replace taking care of your teeth. Remember that regular dental visits, brushing and flossing twice a day are still important for keeping your mouth healthy and clean.

All about dental implants

In the mid 1950s, a historically significant event occurred that would lead to one of the biggest revolutions in dentistry. A material was found - titanium - that would actually adhere to bone. And as boring and mundane as this might sound to your average reader, this was actually huge news in the medical/dental world, and would eventually form the entire foundation of modern implant dentistry.

Invisible alignment

Fact: First impressions matter. People generally form their views of a person in about seven seconds, and for better or worse, it takes a lot of work for them to ever deviate from these hastily-formed judgments.

To chew or not to chew?

What is inside your purse? To this day I can remember what was inside my mother's purse. Besides her wallet she also had a wide array of first aid gear including : tissues, band aids, chapstick, baby wipes, and nail clippers. As a child the most important item in her purse was gum that was readily available. Little did she know she was helping us improve our oral hygiene.
