Labor Day weekend events planned

Spirit Lake and St. Maries will hold festivals this weekend in celebration of the Labor Day holiday.

Labor Day on the Grass in Spirit Lake kicks off today with a 4-by-4 rock crawl exhibition at Volunteer Field at 10th and Jefferson from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In the competition, vehicles travel over boulders, logs and excavator tires. Trophies are given to the fastest to complete the course.

Folks are invited to attend for free and are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs. Donations will be given to the Spirit Lake Parks Department. There will be a beer garden on site.

Sunday's schedule includes a 25-mile mountain bike ride from Mount Spokane to Spirit Lake at 7 a.m. and a car and motorcycle show at City Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On Sunday and Monday there will also be live music by George Bruner and Friends from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and vendors and kids activities at City Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Monday's slate also includes a parade at 11 a.m. on Maine Street. It has been dubbed the second-shortest parade in the nation.

Paul Bunyan Days in St. Maries continues today through Monday.

A carnival and food booths will be at City Park all day during the three days.

There will be a Civil War re-enactment show at Mullan Trail Park today and Sunday at 2 p.m.

Today's schedule also includes a 5-kilometer walk/run starting at St. Maries High School at 8 a.m., lawn mower races on Railroad Avenue at noon and logger water competitions at the pool at noon.

The St. Maries Community Band will perform at City Park at noon and the community choir at 1 p.m.

Sunday's highlights also include an auction at the football field next to City Park at noon and fireworks at 9 p.m.

On Monday, there will be a parade on Main Street at 10 a.m., logging events at 1 p.m. and duck races on the St. Joe River at 2 p.m.

Other activities this weekend include:

* a free Coeur d'Alene Symphony concert on Monday at 1 p.m. at Coeur d'Alene City Park;

* a $5 breakfast fundraiser hosted by the Rathdrum Lions Club at 16114 N. Meyer Road along Highway 53 from 7-11 a.m. on Monday

* A four-day musical festival runs through Sunday at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds. The inaugural Coeur d'Alene Music Festival will feature 40 bands playing pop, rock, hip hop, folk music and more. There will be activities for kids, overnight camping, food vendors, arts and crafts and a beer garden. Hours are 11 to 11 each day. A daily pass is $25.
