COEUR d'ALENE - The Kennewick Lions came out in the first half of Friday's nonleague football game roaring on offense.

Likewise, Lake City showed glimpses of why the Timberwolves have been to the playoffs 15 straight seasons.

As the final gun sounded, both shared the win as the game ended in a 27-27 tie.

Lake City kicker Andrew Hocking evened the game at 27-all with a 30-yard field goal with 12.4 seconds remaining and Kennewick was unable to move the ball into scoring position, with the game ending in a tie.

"What I didn't want to happen was for us to walk out of here with a loss," Lake City coach Van Troxel said. "They fought so hard in the second half, I didn't want them to come up short or with another loss."

They could have played overtime, but instead the longtime coaching friends opted to call the game a draw.

It is Troxel's first tie in his 34-year coaching career.

Driving to inside the red zone, Lake City was unable to move past the 20-yard line, opting to go for the field goal instead of trying to score a touchdown.

"It's the first time in 35 years I haven't gone for it, but there's some moral victories for me from this," Troxel said. "To me, our kids played too hard to possibly walk away with the loss. If we would have played this hard in the first half, none of this would have happened."

Lake City (0-1-1) has a bye next week and will face W.F. West High of Chehalis, Wash., in the Idaho Football Classic on Sept. 15 at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow.

"We're going to look at the second half and focus on that and get guys excited about playing football," Troxel said, "because we've got two weeks before we play again. We're disappointed we didn't win, but the worst thing in the world would have been for us to lose. We've got a lot of work and growing up to do in the next two weeks."

Kennewick jumped out to a 21-0 lead on three touchdown passes from Dylan Tennancour.

Lake City cut the deficit to 21-10 on a 5-yard run by Bruce Shipley in the third quarter, eventually taking the lead at 24-21 on a 63-yard touchdown run by Jerry Louie-McGee with eight minutes left. He also scored from 57 yards out in the third quarter.

“It’s not a surprise to us with the way he practices,” Troxel said. “He had two really nice runs last week (at Eagle) and we knew it was going to come at some point. It was just about getting it at the right point in time and that’s why he’s playing as a sophomore — because he’s a pretty good football player.”

Louie-McGee finished with 134 yards rushing on seven carries.

“It was a fun game to play in,” Louie-McGee said. “But we should have done better in the first half blocking and in the second half, we had an excitement and some good blocks. We could have won, but it is what it is.”

“It’s like kissing your sister I guess,” Kennewick coach Billy Templeton said. “Both teams played their guts out and had opportunities to fold, but just kept coming back. They came out inspired in the second half. They’re a very well disciplined team and well-coached.”
