COEUR d'ALENE - Robert Wilson scored in the 24th minute and the shorthanded North Idaho College men's soccer team earned its first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Northwest College (Powell, Wyo.) at the Cardinal Classic on Friday.

Wilson put in a rebound off a free kick after NIC's Logan Tooley corralled a loose ball from 25 yards out and fired a low, hard shot that bounced off the Northwest goalkeeper.

Justin Johnson made eight saves for the Cardinals (1-2-0), who were playing without starters Eliseo Santana and Christian Mbasi-Botuli. Santana is nursing an injured quad and Botuli was serving a one-game suspension handed down after receiving a red card in last Friday's game against Weber State's club team.

"Justin was our most valuable player today," NIC coach Ken Thompson said. "He fought to get in front of the ball and made saves, but he also prevented a lot of shots by throwing his body around."

The Cardinals host Peninsula College (Port Angeles, Wash.) on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

"It was good for our confidence to get a win today," Thompson said. "We had guys without a ton of minutes come in, step up and do what we asked of them."

First half - 1, NIC, Robert Wilson (unassisted), 24:00. Second half - No scoring.

Shots - NWC 19, NIC 13.

Saves - NWC, Cameron Stanek 4; NIC, Justin Johnson 8.

COEUR d'ALENE - Lindsey Nieters and Samhia Simao scored to lead Northwest College past North Idaho College at the Cardinal Classic.

"We had a few good chances in the second half and each of our goalkeepers had to make a good save to keep the score from getting worse," NIC coach Dan Hogan said. "I know we can play better than we showed today - it's just going to take more intensity in practice so we're training at as high a level as we're going to face when we play good teams."

NIC (2-1-0) hosts Peninsula College on Sunday at 11 a.m.

First half - 1, NWC, Lindsey Nieters (unassisted), 15:00. Second half - 2, NWC, Samhia Simao (unassisted), 58:00.

Shots - NWC 17, NIC 10.

Saves - NWC, Katie Duffy 3; NIC, Alex Rodriguez 3, Hannah Slinkard 2, Whittni Mundel 2.

Cards win twice at Salt Lake tourney

SALT LAKE CITY - Freshman libero Rosie Robinson finished the day with 25 digs and five aces as the Cardinals, ranked 12th in the preseason NJCAA poll, beat Northeastern Junior College of Sterling, Colo., 25-16, 25-15, 28-30, 25-16 and thumped fifth-ranked Western Wyoming 25-14, 25-18, 25-12 in the Salt Lake tournament.

"We played very steady in both games," NIC coach Kandice Gregorak said. "The difference between the first and second was our defense and really eliminating our errors."

Against Northeastern, Shelby Lausen had five blocks, Kaitlyn Molloy 15 kills and Brooklyn Bradbury 24 assists for NIC (5-0), which faces sixth-ranked Western Nebraska today to conclude the tournament.

"We kept the ball in play and let them make the errors," Gregorak said. "Our blocking was fantastic."

HayleeMae Dennis had 11 kills, Molloy nine digs, Lausen seven blocks and Bradbury 21 assists.

"Western Wyoming had a hard time getting the ball past our block," Gregorak said. "But if they did, our defense was very disciplined, usually being in the right spot."

Earlier on Friday, Western Nebraska defeated top-ranked Southern Idaho in four games.
