Crowded hallways, nervous students, and the chatter of people seeing their friends for the first time is the usual scene at any school this time of year. Finding the right classes and looking their best is on the mind of every student, but among the chaos, eating right tends to slip through the cracks. In order to keep up with healthy summer habits and jumpstart the school year, here are some easy tips to use before, during, and after class, that will get students through the day with energy to spare.
The most important part of feeling good throughout the school day of course, is to start off with a healthy breakfast. Easy breakfasts can include oatmeal, fresh fruit, yogurt and milk. Not only are these foods packed with nutrients, but they get you out the door fast. Even with a good breakfast, sometimes students need a boost during the day, so quick, portable snacks are a must. Some things to consider when choosing snacks include; size, durability, and as little preparation as possible. Snack ideas can include granola bars, dried fruit, veggie sticks or a yogurt. For packed fresh items, be sure to take an insulated lunch box for proper food safety precautions.
Unhealthy convenience options can become really tempting. They don't need to be cut out entirely; instead, approach these decisions with more thought. If you are looking for a drink, choose a low calorie option or water. Water is a great appetite suppressant until there is access more healthy options. When it comes to a snack bar, instead of going for a candy bar loaded with sugar, pick some whole grain crackers or a package of almonds or mixed nuts. These options can be just as filling, without all the unnecessary calories. Finally, the tempting coffee stand can be the worst culprit for hidden sugar and fat. For a daily caffeine fix, try passing on the whipped topping, choosing skim milk over 2 percent in a latte, or choose a sugar free syrup option for your mocha.
Include a light snack of fruit and veggies, or cheese and crackers after school. Many students come home famished and this is when they overeat. Planning to eat often throughout the day will keep appetites in check and prevent the after-school binge.
A well balanced diet can be just as important to success during school, as having the right books. If your body feels good, so will your mind. Students following these tips will have more energy to focus on school instead of the sounds your stomach is making!
