Chiefs reassign four,

roster now at 30

SPOKANE - The Spokane Chiefs have reassigned four players leaving them with 30 on the roster.

Spokane has reassigned goaltender Trevor Martin to Sherwood Park of the Alberta Midget Hockey League; goaltender Tyler Verhelst to the Southwest Cougars of the Manitoba Midget Hockey League; defenseman Colton Bobyk to Red Deer of the AMHL; and forward Jacob Cardiff to Notre Dame of the Saskatchewan Midget Hockey League.

The Chiefs are now carrying three goaltenders, 10 defensemen and 17 forwards. By age, the Chiefs have one 16-year-old, 11 17-year-olds, six 18-year-olds, eight 19-year-olds and four 20-year-olds.

Spokane, 1-1 in the preseason, will play another pair of preseason games this weekend, facing Everett on Friday and Tri-City on Saturday at the Tri-City Americans preseason tournament in Kennewick, Wash.

plan tourney for scholarships

Members of the North Idaho College American Indian Student Alliance (AISA) are hosting a third annual golf scramble at Circling Raven Golf Club in Worley to raise money for the Che'nshish scholarship.

The Che'nshish 2012 Scholarship Scramble has a four-person shotgun start at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28. The $100 cost includes a golf cart, driving range access, luncheon, silent auction and raffle during lunch.

This is the third year AISA is hosting the event, which has raised more than $15,000 in two years. The proceeds will help match a three-year American Indian Education Foundation grant.

Three EWU players honored

after win over Idaho

Eastern Washington University linebacker Ronnie Hamlin and kicker Jimmy Pavel have been honored as the Big Sky Conference Players of the Week, with Pavel and wide receiver Brandon Kaufman also earning national accolades.

The trio was honored for their performances in Eastern's 20-3 victory last Thursday over Idaho.

Pavel also earned recognition as a College Sporting News National All Star. Kaufman was selected as a national Wide Receiver Performer of the Week in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision by College Football Performances Awards.

WAC football players of

the week announced

DENVER - New Mexico State wide receiver Austin Franklin, Texas-San Antonio free safety Triston Wade and Texas-San Antonio placekicker Sean Ianno were named the Western Athletic Conference offensive, defensive and special teams players of the week, respectively.

Franklin, a sophomore, set career highs with eight receptions for 236 yards and two touchdowns in New Mexico State's 49-19 season-opening win over Sacramento State. The 236 yards are the third most in school history and the most by a WAC receiver since 2006.

Wade, a sophomore, made a career-high 11 tackles (5 solo), forced a fumble on a 48-yard kickoff return and intercepted a first-and-goal pass in the end zone with the Roadrunners trailing 7-0 in the game at South Alabama. UTSA scored touchdowns following both turnovers to take a 14-7 lead after the first quarter. Wade also had one tackle for a loss of seven yards that helped hold South Alabama to a field goal in the third quarter.

Ianno, a sophomore, made a career-long 51-yard field goal with 16 seconds remaining to give UTSA a 33-31 win at South Alabama. Ianno was 4 for 4 on field goal attempts, including a 47-yarder in the second quarter, and extended his PAT streak to 34 with three more in the game.
