Man sentenced for failing to register

COEUR d'ALENE - A 29-year-old Coeur d'Alene man was sentenced to up to six years in state prison for failing to register as a sex offender, the Kootenai County prosecutor's office said.
John C. Rhoden III, was sentenced by 1st District Court Judge Fred Gibler, who ordered that the first two and a half years of Rhoden's sentence be fixed. He's being given credit for 20 days served in jail.
Gibler also revoked Rhoden's probation for a 2009 burglary conviction and ordered him to serve his five-year sentence in prison. The sentences will be served consecutively.
Rhoden has a long history of refusing to comply with the terms of his probation, registration requirements, and the laws of the state, the prosecutor's office said in a news release.
Rhoden was required to register as a sex offender after he was convicted of lewd and lascivious conduct with a minor in 2001.
Rhoden absconded from probation on the burglary charge in May 2012 and became non-compliant with his registration requirements at the same time.
Arrest warrants were issued shortly afterward and Rhoden was arrested last month after he was featured as the "Fugitive of the Week" by the North Idaho Violent Crimes Task Force.
He also has misdemeanor crimes prosecuted by the Coeur d'Alene city attorney's office.
Kootenai County Prosecutor Barry McHugh said, "The community is at risk when those who are required to register as sex offenders fail to do so, and in this case the risk was increased by Mr. Rhoden's demonstrated inability to comply with conditions of probation."
The North Idaho Sex Offender Task Force, a joint federal-state team, investigated and prosecuted Rhoden's failure to register.
So far this year, the task force has brought more than 30 offenders into compliance with registration rules, prosecuted about 20 criminal cases, and developed the capability to monitor various Internet sites and services for the distribution of child pornography.
